I am in the process of tuning a 5200 on my Falcon. I picked it up at the junk yard off a Pinto. The carb looked really nice like a new rebuild so I dropped it on my motor. I'm having some issue getting it to run right.

Does anyone know what the float heights should be on a 5200 with a metal float?

Also, I can twist the idle mixture screw all the way in and the engine keeps running. My thought is that it is running a little rich. Any ideas? The idle jets I have in it are 50 primary and 70 secondary.

Thanks

Hi falcon63,

The float should close the neddle as the top of the float becomes parallel with the air horn cover mounting surface. Don't remeber the hight from the mounting face but parallel will work.

Your idle jets are about right. The carb is progressive so the secondary idle jets purpose is to keep the secondary circuit wet, i.e., so fuel is immediately available when the secondary opens. The car does not idle on the secondary. I have a 65 in mine. I also have a 50 as my primary.

As for the idle mixture control. It adjusts the primary idle circuit only. If you can turn the screw all the way in without killing the engine then I suspect either a bad screw (check the tip for damage) or a bad idle screw seat in the carb (hope not), or both. If you have a bad seat (easy to damage - screw is steel, seat is aluminium), you may be able to soomth it up with the right gringing tool. Do it by hand a little at a time. Keep it clean. You really have nothing to lose in trying this as your only other choice is to get a new carb. If you screw up the seat cleaning, get a new carb.

Best of luck - Steve

Thanks for the input.

A couple things I found from the time I posted the topic:

Although the carb looked brand new, I should have known better than to just mount it on my engine and expect it to run well. Digging into it a little, I found a piece of debris in the float needle seat and the power valve diaphragm was hot!

I replaced the diaphragm. By the way, the idle mixture needle looked good. The carb seems to be running much better. I still have some tuning to do to get it right.

8)

info i have says the dry float setting should be .200"(5mm)

In case you didnt know dry float setting is turn the top upside down and it should be .200 between float and edge of top.
