62 170 oil pump problem

I have a 62 Fairlane with a 170 in it. Its an all original car and never been into. I am using the original Distributor and shaft, when I changed the oil pump out the dist. shaft bottoms out to fast and wont let the dist. go down all the way, it needs to go down about 1/4 inch more. I have a NOS C1DZ 6600A oil pump and this is what the majority of the books etc. say my car takes, however, it obviously isnt correct. I mounted my old pump back on and it all mounts up correctly. I did find one book that tells me I need a C0DZ 6600A but Im not sure what the difference is. The NOS pump I have looks exactly like the original externally but apparently there is a measurement difference internally. Any help or input on this would be appreciated. Wondering if I should just cut off 1/4 inch or so on the dist. shaft? Thanks

Ken are you sure the pump drive shaft is meshing into the distributor when you install it. It is real common to have the distributor not seat completely until you've rotated the motor some. Try cranking it while pushing the distributor into it's bore, see if it dosen't just pop into place.
 
Yes, Im sure its bottoming out to soon. The short block is on the motor stand and I tried turning the crank and that makes no difference. There has to be a different oil pump, Like my original, that is for my car but nobody can tell me what that pump or number is.
 
Are you able to rebuild the original oil pump? If it's just a worn cover, that may be able to be resurfaced.
 
The original pump was made of cast aluminum and it is grooved out pretty bad on the machined surface. Its not rebuildable. All the replacement pumps I have seen are cast iron type.
 
Measure the depth of the original and new pump using the hex rod. They should be the same if the correct pump was used. There were several different hex rod sizes used depending on the pump and dizzie combination.

I have never seen an original aluminum oil pump. It is probabely an aftrermarket installed by someone. The Melling # should be M65A for your application. It uses a 1/4" drive shaft.

The M65B uses the 5/16" drive and a longer rod. These were used on 200 and later model 170's.
 
The first pump I tried was a Melling M65A and it was nowhere close to letting the dist. go down. The original aluminum pump is a FOMOCO pump and the motor, oil pan etc. has never been off per the original owner. I have a long 1/4 shaft on the dist. and ended up going with the NOS Ford pump and cutting 1/4 inch off the end of the dist shaft so that it will go down all the way. Dont see why this wont work. Im finding out that for some reason 62 is kind of a beast of its own, not just on the motor but other parts as well, hood springs for instance, you can get them for 63 and up new but not for a 62, dont know what the difference is.

No, no. But close. The M65 (no suffix) fits 144s and 170s manufactured until 10/1/63. The M65-A is for 144/170 and 4-main 200s after then, the M65-B is for 7 main 200s, and the M65-C is for Argie engines.

Had a devil of a time with this last year, and did a good bit of research.
 
Well this has been a learning curve for me, thats for sure. A local guy here has the original Ford books and his books even said use the CDZ etc. pump. So I got a NOS one from him and thats what all the repro parts guys catalogs say as well, but they are wrong on this application. I would have liked to had the correct pump but I think the shaft cutting solved the issue. Thanks
