Hello all, I have a 62 chero with a 170. I have had problems when it starts up and i go to take off and it dies. I have to pump the acc. alot and finally after dieing it will go. Does anyone know if i can put a two barrel carb on it? I have a holly 1 barrel now is there anything better than it...It drives great after I can get it going..lol I was thinking of putting a 289 in it so I have no problems with the carb or other parts....As you can tell I have had lots of porblems with the carb and tring to figure this out. I live in Moreno Valley Ca. and its hard to find a good ford engine guy out here...Thanks for ya'lls help Jake out

Do a search in this forum for carb upgrades or go to the tech section of this website:

People have done just about everything from getting a good rebuilt Autolite 1100 from Pony Carbs (direct replacement) to multiple carbs of various origins (head modifications required).

Good luck. You will find that you have many options. Figuring out the carb issue and doing other simple upgrades are far easier than dropping in a 289 and praying all your worries go away.

Changing to a bent 8 won't solve your carb problems. 8) From your description, it sounds as though your accelerator pump is bad. A rebuild may help a lot.

hello all thanks for the replies so far. i will look more into the carbs. and as far as my acc pump i have had it changed twice and have gotten the rebulid on my last new carb and also a rebulid on this carb. as you can see i have had many problems, and now i want to see what all is out there just to make it run better and more reliable. i also have questions on diff fuel pumps, distributor, ya know things to make it better so i wont have to change it all out....i do like the st8 6 at shows people are amazed they are still around and runnin....jake out

Maybe you need some more choke for the first minute or 2. If your Holley is anything like a 60 or 61, the accelerator pump rod can get real dirty and sticky so it doesn't spring all the way back out when the throttle goes back to the idle position. It'll work above idling, but stumble from a idling start. Do you have a manual choke?

I'm with 61Futura. It sounds chokish. That carb doesn't have a thermostatic choke does it? If so, it's usually not too hard to rig up a manual setup.

yes it is a man choke....i choke it good and let it warm up and then let it idle. then when i push on the gas it just dies....thats why i was wondering if i switched to another brand of carb (if there is something known better) than i would. yes i would like to stick money into this engine but i need to find ways to make it better in reliablity, have to work the bugs out of it...thanks for ya'lls help cause i need it on getting this better..jake out
