Just picked up a '64 Comet 404 wagon with I-200, 2 speed auto. I know nothing about the inline 6, only the 289-428 fords. The car starts, rattles badly from the bottom end of the block for 8 seconds and than runs fine. If it runs for any longer than 2 minutes it starts knocking and I have to shut it off. I am dropping the pan tonight to check if the oil pump filter is clogged, or the pump itself is bad. Am I on the right track? I do think it is not getting any oil pressure. It does not smoke, sounds good, but than starts the routine all over again. I've only run it twice. What do you think?

Thank.

Don, sounds like you have a sludged up engine.
DROP the pan and see if the pickup screen & the pan is full of sludge & debris.
I assume you had changed the oil & filter previous to this post?? William

Yeah, I drained the oil last night, but was fighting with the oil pan. I swear, if the oil pan is as crust inside as the seal to block is outside I'm almost afraid to look in it. I have never pried on anything that stuck on an engine before. Is there a trick to these sixes? It seem to be the most stuck on the ends.

Thanks.

Make doubly sure you got all the bolts off- it's easy to miss the two larger ones closest to the crankshaft at each end of the pan if there is a lot of crud built up due to seepage at the ends.

I did remove all the bolts. All the 7/16 bolts on the sides and the 1/2" bolts on the ends. Just very stuck I think.

sounds like it
probably the original pan gasket, i'd bet that it's just cemented on there

I think you are on the right track cleaning the pan, but i would also pull the vavle cover to make sure that the oil can get back to the pan. check those drain holes they can cause the very thing you mention. You start have oil pressure,... then Two mins later no pressure? If this happens I think I would go back up to the top of the motor.
