A few months ago, I tried to replace my starter and found that even though the local replacement was the same case size, when I tried to start the car with the new starter, it made the worst sound. I know that isn't much description of the noise, but I don't know how to describe this odd sound. I've changed plenty of starter before but never anything like this. I think that the torque converter was banging away on the nose of the starter?? Any thoughts, I gave the new one to my Mom ( she has a '66 convertible 6 banger) and it worked great. She had been saying that her starter drive had been acting up and was quite suspicious of me showing up with a new starter for her. Any ideas what to try when my starter does finally go all the way out.
