71 straight six Rocker arms HELP

So i want to replace the valve seals on my 71 250 inline 6 but im wondering if i take off the arm assembly do i have to adjust them? Or can i just torque them back?

That would require keeping the valves closed, either by air pressure, or the old rope-in-the-cylinder trick. Then using an above-the-head valve spring compressor. Do you even have adjustable rockers? If not, no adjustment. If so, theoretically nothing really changes just by putting in valve seals, but always a good idea to check adjustment if they are adjustable.

I have the stock arms i think they have springs in between each cylinder valve, and its pretty much just one big assembly. And what would be the torque sequence and pressure.
 
A 1971 engine has non-adjustable rocker arms stock so unless they have been changed to an early adjustable set there is no adjustment. It's a good practice when reusing pushrods, lifters, rockers arms etc. so that they stay in the same place they came out of as the parts have worn to each other. Good luck :nod:

Hi, another guy found the same problem about 10 posts down. There are resources around for torque specs and things like that. When you take the rocker shaft off and on do it slowly and in stages from the center out. You will have some valves open and that will pop the rocker shaft up on removal, and will hold the shaft up on assembly. You need to go slow and even so you don't bend the shaft as those valves will be pushed open as you tighten the pedestal bolts. Clean as much crud out of the head as you go and don't overtighten the valve cover bolts. Good luck
 
The rockers are torqued down to 34-36 Ft. Lbs. yes x2 as B Ron Co said work slowly from the center out do a 1/4 to 1/2 turn as you are bringing the rocker pedestals back down on the head and working against those valve springs that will be compressing. Good luck :nod:
