While searching for a large log head upgrade for my '65 Ranchero 200, I came across a '78 200 block, head and C4 trans that came out of '65 Ranchero.
I really only need the head. But are there any advantages to the '78 200 block over my '65 200? (I don't think so). But what about the '78 C4?? Are there any advantages over my '65 C4 and if so, would it be difficult to fit into my '65 Ranchero?
Thanks for any info

the later C4 U have = better (but can upgrade that 1 too)
earlier block (after '64 2*of sm hole for dizzy) = better due to metalurgy (strength).I think in the middle yrs was the best, later dwn hill again.
For both answ some 1 w/more detail will B along shortly :nod:

@SweetSix,

Is your ‘65 200 one of those with only four main bearings?

If so, the ‘78 would be much more durable. Also, the ‘78 would have better carburetion and ignition.

Finally, many prefer the “low mount starter” configuration of some later blocks.

Thanks
Bob

post up apic of the bell, wanna see if can fit both, that can help w/decisions...

Would you go w/a C4 in ur vehicle? They R the least parasitic of the autos, can handle 500HP, have good after mrkt support, light, etc. One good source for all things rest0mod:

Yes diffenatly the 1978 C4 is one of the very best C4's it's improvements are miles ahead of the older 1965 & 1966 Dual Range C4's. All 1972 up C4's come with all the factory Improvements that were made to them over their lifetime, such as the Select Shift valve body for faster shifts with less heat from slippage, the larger input shaft and its matching torque convertor, etc. it's basically a bolt in swap for your 1965 C4, the one difference is the gear patteren is different from your current P, R, N, D1, D2, L, it changes to the P, R, N, D, 2, 1, so your gear indicator needs to be changed to a 1967 or newer indicator. You could also add a TransGo Shift kit and a small aux. trans cooler, and a few other mod's if you wanted.

The only advantage of the 1978 200 short block over your 1965 200 is that the 78 has the duel bolt pattern for the bell housing might be important if you ever wanted to go to a 3, 4, 5, speed stick trans and use the larger bell housing, flywheel, larger 9 inch clutch. You could resell it too if you didn't want to keep it around for a spare. Best of luck :thumbup: :nod:
