78 Fairmont

I have located a 1979 Fairmont engine and would anyone know what type of electronics this engine would have as far as the distributor is concerned this engine would be going into a 65 comet. the engine has 128000 km on it. what differences would this engine have compared to the 65 200?

Should have Duraspark II with the spark box on the drivers side inner fender.

Main difference is the Fox body uses a rear sump oil pan and the 65 uses a front sump pan. You will need different oil pan and the pickup tube for front sump pan.

The late model motor also has the better larger valves and larger carb hole and a Holley 1946 1bbl.

Howdy:

And- the front pully system is longer on the '79. Enough that it may be a clearance problem. Also the compression ratio is down to 8:1 on the '79 200.

NOne of these are big issues. All the '65 stuff will swap to the '79 for bottom and front clearances. You might want to get the gas pedal and throttle cable from the Fairmont to make carb linkage less of a problem with the Holley #1946, or you could adapt your '65 Autolite 1100 using your '65 mechanical linkage for a stock look. Be sure to plug the SCV.

Adios, David

Ok what is the scv? What does anyone think the engine would be worth? He's asking 300 which I think is a little high.

I paid my local junkyard $150 for the 200 I got from a '78 Zephyr. It was complete from air cleaner to oil pan. For that price, they did the work of taking it out of the vehicle and loading it onto our truck.

I checked the nationwide junkyard database and the average price is between 250 and 400 so maybe he's not too far off. I am also checking out a fella with what he says is a rebuild 200 with only 500k on it and he's asking 600 the motor is still in his mustang and he has now decided to put in a 302. I don't know if he realizes he should change the suspension but I'm not mentioning it to him.

I asked the guy when was the last time it ran and he says two years ago I'm thinking that perhaps the valve guide seals might be dried out. This guy is in Toronto and that's a four hour drive one way so its hard to go and just take a look.

He says it 128000km which would be about 80000 miles which is actually 30000 more than I have on my engine. I assume that it could be in better shape being 15 years newer and I assume perhaps better oils, but I agree its a turkey shoot.

Is the distributor in the 79 Fairmont the same as the Duraspark 11 (the guy said he would throw in the control box) and if so would not the price of the motor warrant the cost because of the distributor alone?

You can try to negotiate for as much stuff as you can.
A pulled dizzy si worth $20, maybe $20 for the ECU.
Get all the wiring harnesses and connectors you can. Should include head with exhaust manifold.
Alternator, power steering pump, transmission kickdown linkage, carb, air cleaner, etc.?
Coil, starter solenoid, vacuum lines, radiator, starter? These are the things I would think about if I was pulling an engine from a parts car.

I pulled a head and everything attached to it, carb, rockers, exhaust, etc. at a local yard and paid $35.

for the price he was giving me everything that you mentioned. I'm afraid that because I live in Northern Ontario that there are not many junk yards and the ones that are close by don't keep old stuff.

I have a brother-inlaw in Winnipeg that I haven't heard from in years perhaps it will be an excuse to go see him.
