About valves

Maybe a stupid question... but.. uhm okay here I go,
How to clean valves from a 250 79 head? They're crudded up and I can put a brush on it but that probably wouldn't take care of it. Also I know that I can't just hammer on them because I can damage them in some way. So what is the proper way to do it?

a stiff wire wheel brush (straight, not knotted) will do the job, usually.

Carb cleaner, easy off, other solvents, small putty knife,wire brush, etc but your right -stop short of useing a hammer.
