Acceleration Noise

Hey guys,

I've been having this problem with acceleration. My car is all stock, the engine is not rebuilt, same from 1966. I'm not sure whether it's a problem or not but, when i push on gas hard to get the car moving on to traffic there is this noise that comes from the engine. When I step on the gas lightly i can barely hear the noise. The engine makes and rattling rev noise. I mean I know the car and engine is old but it's like the car has no acceleration power for hills or even going onto the freeway. I'd say it takes about a good 20 seconds to get to 60 mph without causing the engine to make that noise.

I know I haven't given a lot of information, but any of you guys have any idea or just some general feedback, that'd be great.

Thanks,
Bryan

check youre ignition timing, it sounds like the motor has to much advanve... it could be fine at idle say 6-8 degs but if it has a broken spring in the dissy or a worn spring, it could be giving the engine to much advance to early in the rev range, to check this get a timing light , disconect the vac advance, a pen and paper and, for every 500 rpm , write what youre advance is, then post the results... i havnt had much experiance on the american motors, with youre grade of fuel , but id say you wouldnt want to be much of 30 deg totall, i may be right of with that figure, but it should get u in the ball park,

You're probably carboned up. :( Try running a higher octane, until you can "decoke" the engine. There are numerous posts here on water injection.

Check your timing, pull your plugs, check your rotor and cap for wear and tear. Sounds like you may be knocking a little. Try a higher octane fuel as well.

But...it could also be an exhaust leak. It sounds like a knocking. My car has a good exhaust leak right now that is really loud on heavy acceleration. Double check your exhaust bolts and retorque them to spec.
