I recently found a NOS "Aux Oiler Kit" for a 223 (and any older small I6). It's the little oil tube that runs into the rocker cover to theoretically bring extra oil up there more quickly. I've read about these old six's running dry on the top end, so I imagine that's where these little kits came from.

Any of you guys use these? I can post a picture of the kit when I get home if necessary.

I finally found a replacement 223 for my severely-injured 223 and was thinking about installing this kit on the new one.

Thoughts?

These kits were developed back when oil had a bad tendancy to sludge up. The 215 / 223s were famous for blocking the oil passages to the head. With a clean motor and modern oil it is not a problem. I would not install the kit (extra oil leak potential, no real advantage, etc.).

Thanks for the reply. Luckily, I got it for a mere $10 including shipping, so it's no big loss. I agree about inducing the potential for leaks by installing this. If it was a good thing to install, I would do it. Otherwise, I'll just hang on to it or stick it back on Ebay.

I totally agree with Fred. In 1955, Ford recommended oil changes every 2000 miles and that wasnt often enough. Oil was like Ellie May Clampett's mud, but modern oil is much better refined. If youve ever torn down an old engine back in the '50s and saw the sludge buildup, theres no comparison to detergent oils today.
