I'm not sure why I am so obsessed with my air cleaner selection, but I am. so leave it at that.

Anywho, I want to top off my Aussie setup with something equally hot. Right now, I've just got a little round chrome aircleaner. The off-the-shelf kind. Really doesn't do the motor justice (looks and breathing).

My primary issue is space. I've got very little clearance near the shock tower...the export brace is only handfull of inches behind and my montecarlo bar is close up front. Aarg. What to do...what to do...? What have the rest of you Aussie swappers done?

I really want to setup a Ram Air system but it has to look at least as sharp as it works...even more so! I've been tinkering with getting a carb hat that would be used with a supercharger or turbo and hooking it up to some polished piping like the ricers use...a couple of tight bends and I should be able to clear the Monte ok. I've got lots of room on the passenger side of the radiator since I relocated it a few inches the other way, so that'd be a great place for a collection box and filter. Sounds doable right?

Problem: the stupid carb hats are OFF THE CHARTS expensive for what they are! Hundreds of $ for one is crazy.

I like Geezer's setup but I of course don't have nearly enough room to do something like that. If I could find a small ENCLOSED oval air cleaner, i probably could fab up the rest. Anyone have a suggested donar car or source for a small oval?

I also like the old Caddy batwing aircleaners. Realy cool looking...sorta ram-air like. Probabyl would fit. Pretty expensive though.

I need some idee-ers fellas!

Obsessed in Florida

Ram Flo air cleaner like CobraSix.

It isn't the best, but it's small, and won't give you any grief.

My favorite is the American made Impco CA 300 remote carburettor mount. It will fit, and can polish up really well. You can fit the common 1961-1970's Dodge 318 air cleaner insert in it, and drape it on the free area above the plugs and distributor.

In Europe, they have a version of it using a conical K&N filter.

On other option is going over Does10's posts, and get one of those lovely carb bonnets. Make a remote K&N filter for it, and then when you get ready for the turbo, you have no excusses!

When you say ram flow, do you mean this:

No offense to CobraSix, but it just doesn't do it for me asthetically

A litte pricey and you'd need a hole, but if you offset it just a couple of inches toward the driver's side, this would look neat and would certainly cause some head scraching.

LOL! a LITTLE pricey, eh Jack?

I have often considered the possibility of designing a pop-up/hideaway hood vent that would tunnel down into the aircleaner assembly. A little throttle actuated lever that would pop up the hidden hood vent/scoop.

I'm suprised no one has taken the false "scoop" that is the chrome hood emblem on the round body falcon and turned it into a functional scoop. If my aircleaner was centered under the hood, I might have been the first to do that.

I think one of the Schjeldahl Bros has functionalised his faux scoop. I've seen it here, with flywire inserts.

Im going to make my own as I want to use a 14 inch and the only way to get it to fit is to make it off centre on the carb and then double pin it to ensure the top compresses to the base. While Im at it Im also preparing my manifold to fit two hyclones under both of the primaries in some bent pipe I got made up today.

Great topic guys. I wanted to make my scoop functional but can't get seem to open/close it during rain and such. Just cutting a hole and adding fly screen would be easy, but a mess in the rain.
Currently, I'm using a Harley air cleaner. Fit perfect (1 barrel carb) and looks different. You haven't explored that area yet. You should. There are a lot of neat air cleaners in the cycle field that might work.
