Air Intake/Exhaust on 300 I6

Hi guys!

First at all, I am from Latvia and i think after last summer olympics you might already know my country.

But this is not the point why i am here, i am here to ask you some qouestions. :help:
A couple weeks ago i got from my dad a very nice 1994 Ford F150 XL with I6 4.9 L EFI engine and E40D automatic transmission. After that i surf the internet and found out, that my car has only 150 hp (108 kw) and 265 lb·ft (359 N·m). I also surfed your fordsix.com forum to find out what i can do to this engine (who is very durable) to get from him more hp and torque. And yet i cannot afford turbos/superchargers etc, so i want to ask: Can you recommend me, what kinda exhaust system do i need to install to my truck to get more hp/torque? I dont need some cool sound or something like that - i like the original I6 sound  But i need better performance on high speed (60 mph<...)! Yeah, I know this truck isnt racing car and will never be, but i know i can do wonderful things with air to this engine!

Can you help me?

ps. Nice forum!
pss. I am sorry about my grammar

have you driven the truck? what is your father intending to use it for? what differential gear ratio does it have now?

the truck will already go well over 60mph and cruise there just fine.

There are no huge gains to be had from any bolt-ons.
Opening up the exhaust a little bit will help but opening it up too far can hurt.
On an otherwise stock engine, a 2.5" (63.5mm) exhaust system with mandrel-bent pipes will help if you combine it with a high-flow muffler and (if it is legal to make the change in your country) a high-flow catalytic converter.

I have no idea what brands of speed parts you have access to but I am very happy with my Flowmaster exhaust system with their Series 70 muffler and my Catco converter. You can also single-source the entire system from Magnaflow.

I am unimpressed by the aftermarket air intakes.

Yes, i have. My father doesn't have any specific ideas in future for this truck. For one i am sure - we dont want to do anything bad to him :nono:

I really dont know what kinda differential gear ratio does it have now. How can i found it out? Nothing is changed in factory settings.

Now i am not sure what to do ... If you all say that truck runs great already, and it does not make sense to do something with it, than i am going to agree with you. :|

the gear ratio can be found on a metal tag that is bolted on with the cover on the rear diff, though that tag is somtimes lost if service has been performed. you can also find an axle code on the sticker in the drivers side door jamb.

you need to be more specific about what you the truck to do, where you think it needs improvments.

I already said it:

:?: :|

I can't afford turbos/superchargers, but i have read in your forum that these 300 CID engines are very grateful, when you upgrade car intake/exhaust .

My Axle Ratio: 3.08

:hmmm: StrangeRanger gave you a great answer (above post) for the exhaust on a stock EFI truck. I have a 94 F150 a lot like yours, it has a 5 speed and short bed though. I am limited by the Ca smog rules so that would be the exhaust system I would use on mine if the cats are legal for Ca. You will get the most performance boost out of swapping in a 5 speed (big job and lots of different parts) and your MPG would even be a little better, or you could go with a lower rear gear set and the MPG will go down some. That said I would like an auto trans in mine now don't think am up for that much work to change it over. Good Luck
