alt turns engine over?

so I have gone through everything under the hood on my 68 and put everything back together .got the engine running.but when I hook up the alternator it wants to turn the engine over?? has anyone had this problem before?? do I have the alt put together wrong??

I don't know how this would happen with an alt. but on a generator if the contacts stick in the regulator it turns the generator into a motor. If you have it wired right then I would suspect the regulator is toast.

I can start the car without the alt hooked up.when I connect the alt hot wire to the left side of the relay (front post) it starts cranking the starter over??the only wire connected to the back post is to the starter.

:hmmm: Have you had the alt. tested off the car yet? Most auto parts stores will do it free. You might try tapping top of the sol. old one can some times stick

good idea,I did replace the relay maybe I should put the old one back on? I also sand blasted the regulator.maybe that has something to do with it?

:) Uh guys.In the 4th post from the bottom,I noticed that he said "STARTER"cranks over when he connects the regulator to the battery.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

I noticed the same as Leo- I think you have a wiring issue- alternator/battery power does not go to the starter relay. As you have found, when power goes to that relay, the relay is energized and the starter turns. Your starter switch goes to that relay, not your alternator/battery.

I've got to change my meds LOL. When I first read his post I thought of the alt. turning into a motor and not the motor turning over its self. Of course everyone is right you have a wiring issue

Sounds like you're hooking up the alternator output to the "Starter" pole on the start relay - which would of course energize the starter motor.

Alternator output goes to the "Battery" pole on the start relay - the BIG pole that also connects to the + side of the battery. That's how current gets from the alternator to the battery.

Here's a link to a '65 falcon wiring diagram, I think a '68 would be similar. But you really (really) need to get yourself a wiring diagram for your car, also a Chassis Manual and an MultiMeter for testing voltage, continuity, etc.

I sure did have some wiring issue.I was connecting the alt wire to the battery side of the relay were it goes. and some how it was kicking in the starter?? I had half the ignition wiring apart at this time .now that I have the interior wiring back together everything seems to be fine.it was on my list of things to fix..seems to have fixed itself when I put everything back together.thanks all

Yup, a generator can certainly be turned into a motor, but you would have to hit an alternator with a suitable AC voltage to motorize it.
