Am I missing something? (engine part)

Yeh, I know I'm missing lots of things, but, is there supposed to be a sheet metal spacer plate between the '60 & '61 144 or 170 block and the 2spd auto tranny? I don't have one but see that the 250 engine I have laying around has one hanging on the back end of the block. If mine should, maybe that explains the knock I'm hearing. I think the torque converter may be barely hitting the front pump housing on the tranny. It's quiet when under power in drive, but noisey when I coast or idle. It is also noisey in reverse. It has always been that way. I've taken the tranny off and saw some scrape marks on the converter cooling fins. I have no problems with the starter. The noise is loudest at the torque converter or opening in the inspection plate.

I would suspect that was the case but I'm more knowledgeable with the later cars. Is a Ford shop manual available for your car? It would show if a block plate was used or not.

My '64 Comet 170 doesn't have any kind of spacer on the block, never had one. It has a manual tranny.

See Ya,
Mike

Over hear we call it a sandwich plate. I think it may use one, but my 66 manual 200, if its auto or manual, runs the same plate about 60 thou thick as my 1984 Falcon 250 cross-flow. With alloy transmissions this plate helps spread the crush from the four bolts. BKNLINE's advice is the key.

Someone here should know!

IIRC,

my original block had not spacer plate and was for a manual transmission.

my second block came from an automatic car and had the spacer plate. I didn't not reinstall the spacer plate since I have an T-5.

Both blocks were 200CIs though.

Hmm... Over here, they seemed to come with manual trannies.

XE, you'll have 2 clues as to the original trans type on your motors. One is the dizzy code (and no. springs if it's vacuum only), and the other is the flywheel to crank bolts (length and presence of ring washer).

Adam.

My Ford shop manual doesn't mention or show one. When I took the tranny & flex plate off of a barely running donor car ('60), I don't remember if there was one on the 144. I doubt there was or I would have noticed it, Maybe. I really didn't know what I was doing 3 years ago when I started this project. I have been told by a local expert that it probably did have one. I'd like to get one just to see if it gets rid of the annoying knocking that I have now.

Steve, time to dial your end float. This will reveal something, I fear.

Heh Steve, My 63 comet with a 170 ci and 2 speed auto did not have one when I exchanged it for a 200 with C4. I believe I was the first one to take it apart.

It took me a minute to figure out "dial your end float"? The condition of my thrust bearing I suppose. The 170 was supposed to be a fresh rebuild. But the head had a broken exhaust port ear, so I replaced it with another head. Then rebuilt that head that had 2 bad exhaust valves. $400 dollars later it ran nice til the carb needed attention. I'm going to bebuild a '68 200 that I've torn down. Looking for a 3spd auto donor car to hook onto a 200cid.

I think I'll call the part I am wondering about, a "crush plate" then followed by the other names, until I'm not getting a dull stare. There wasn't a flex plate or crush plate on the 200 for me to use with the future swap.
