Yeh, I know I'm missing lots of things, but, is there supposed to be a sheet metal spacer plate between the '60 & '61 144 or 170 block and the 2spd auto tranny? I don't have one but see that the 250 engine I have laying around has one hanging on the back end of the block. If mine should, maybe that explains the knock I'm hearing. I think the torque converter may be barely hitting the front pump housing on the tranny. It's quiet when under power in drive, but noisey when I coast or idle. It is also noisey in reverse. It has always been that way. I've taken the tranny off and saw some scrape marks on the converter cooling fins. I have no problems with the starter. The noise is loudest at the torque converter or opening in the inspection plate.
