Another oil pump question

A little background. I bought this Econoline with 144 6 and the engine was wore out. Previous owner had put new oil pump in trying to improve oil pressure, which it didn't. I am rebuilding a 170 to replace it and am going to use the oil pump previous owner put in the 144. It had less than 200 miles on it. I have always packed oil pumps with petroleum jelly for priming. I took the plate from this pump to pack it and the 2 rotating parts had marks on them which I assume is index marks. On the large driven gear the mark was down and the small drive gear the mark was up, which is the only way it will go. Hummmm, I think they should be up where you can see them both and set them. Don't know whey they should be set as I've never rebuilt a Ford I-6. Naturally, the manual doesn't say a thing about this. Soooo, I took the old oil pump apart and both marks were up as I thought they should be. Anyone's thought or knowledge will be appreciated. I think I should turn the one gear over and not worry about it being run a short time upside down. What are the marks for?
