yea, i used to be scared to shift manually since i dont have a tach, but finally i said whatever and decided to giver....i found shiflting from 1st to 2nd at 50-55mph quite nice, doesnt feel like i'm gonna blow the engine or anything (It just feels right)....then i shift from 2nd to drive at around 70-80 mph and can cruise right on up to whatever i can (only gone 85mph max so far, cause i dont like to speed when there are too many cars around, unless i'm racing someone...), I find shifting like this makes the car accelerate lots faster......just wondering if anyone else does any shifting like this....

yeah ive done this alot. I noticed that when i just left it in regular drive, it felt really gutless at stop lights etc. But if i droped down to 2nd it moved quite nicely and even fairly fast. Never tried going all the way down to first though.

I thought first would be quite short but i get quite a bit of power from first if i let it go to higher RPMs than drive will allow, definitely feels gutless in drive. Try starting in first and it should be even better than starting out in second...i havent timed 0-60 yet but in drive its about 13 secs, this feels more like 10, maybe even better (that might be pushing it though)

The neat thing with the 250 over the little 200 is the long, tall gearing, and the ability for the big bearing, long stroke crank to cope with it. I'm amazed at how my old XE Falcon could run up to 5400 rpm without killing itself.

Indications are that the US 250 engine has a strong crank then the Aussie 250.

Are you running 2.93 or 2.78 gears? The 2.77:1 diff I had in the XE gave me mondo grunt off line, and was lovely on the open road at 80 mph...which is the speed my wife used to use all the time. The best is kicking down on a hilly road when someone with a trailer is slow. A sharp prod on the gas, and the old girl picked up its skirt, and hauled its a$$ to pass. Not guite as savage as a v8, but quiter, and scarry to those being passed!

not sure what my gear ratio is (a freind said i probably had 3:73, but i dont really know) I can check.....so i ratate the tire and the first number is the amount of times the tire trned and the second is the amount of times the driveshaft turned right???

Yeah, I like my C-4's 1-2-D shift set up in the 68. I usually shift around 30-35mph from 1 to 2. I think I do so because my repro 68 musang owner's manual doesnt recommend driving above 35mph in 1st.

Hey,

I remember my comet with the old 2 speed and modified 61' 170 (mech. cam)... It was horrible untill 30 in first... but really picked up the pace to near 70 mph (at around 6,000) in first. Eventually I got sick of waiting for the power to "build up" and swapped out the old 2-speed.

i have a 66 with a 200 and C-4, its only mildly upgraded so would i be able to shift manually 1-2-D with the stock trans? also, i thought the highest gearing available was a 3.50:1 in the 7.25. i have 2.83:1 gears in my 7.25" rear.

i have an 8.7" rear axle....

x21: the owners manual suggests the best usage of the engine and tranny to give the components the longest lasting life, they probably dont recommend driving with the pedal to the metal either....If you got a little speed demon  inside of you then you tend to push the limits....

when i installed my tranny (got it from a parts yard and it looked like it had been rebuilt) my friend said he saw the brand of the torque converter in a racing magazine (i dont remember the name and i'm not taking off the tranny to check), i think it was three letters though and i think 'S' was one of the letters...whatever...at least i know i got a decent tranny in the car...just got to install performance parts on it now...
