I am lead to believe that I can bolt an AOD to my 1957 223 using the Basic Hardware Kit at Speedway Motors. In their description, it says...
"Basic Hardware Only
If you have access to your own transmission and parts or you wish to adapt an AOD or C4/C6, this basic adapter set is what you need. Includes starter nose cone, flexplate, bellhousing adapter and instructions. Choice of 157 or 164 flexplate."
A while back, I purchased a 302 and an AOD out of a mid 80's Mercury with the intent of building it and swapping out my 223. I have since changed my mind because I want to keep the inline 6. I was about to sell of the 302 and tranny to fund some 223 projects, but when I read the description of the kit, I thought that when my original A/T dies (or sooner) it would be great to be able to swap in the AOD that I already have. Better performance, mileage, etc., and I already have the tranny in hand. When I drove the doner car home, the tranny shifted perfectly and had no leaks or any other issues that I could find.
Am I reading too much into that description or does it look like this would work?
