ARP Head studs!!!

Does anyone know if the smallblock Chebbie long studs would work on our sixes.....the (long) bolts on a 350 are 7/16-14 x 313/16" and they're exactly fourteen....would they work ?????? Anyone??? Bueller????

Alex

Sounds good, but they are short by 7/16 ths of an inch, or 11.1 mm. Stokers are 4.25" for the logs, aren't they? I'd guess that is too much thread interlock to loose. If they can provide the clamping load of the 102 Nm (75 lb-ft, isn't it) without taking the threads out of a cast block then I'd say "go for it " Must make sure the things sit snug, too.

Actually I measured my head bolts (from head to tip)and they measure 3.464" (8.8cm).
The Chebbie "long" bolt measure 3.8125", so there would be a difference of 0.3485" (0.8851cm). So from the looks of it it should work? Right???

Alex

Correctymo, comrade. I mesured them, and there is 4.25 inches from the base of the head, to the end of the bolt. The stock Ford thread engagement is ~28 mm, or an inch and 1/8. All of the thread is used. But with the Chevy long bolt, you may loose out half of the depth of the thread on a stock Ford bolt. So the chebby bolt lookes like it won't engage enough.

However, it all comes down to how much it can clamp up to. I'm a little nervous. Ford may have over done the thread a little, and gone to a lower grade bolt specification. Could be that the Chevy ARP one is better, and can make up for the lack of thread engagement.

It's your call.

XECUTE.... been doing some more diggin' on this topic, it seems (at least in theory) that the slant six may share some similarities to our sixes....I found this chart on /6 page SL6 Bolt List

I'm going to measure the head and main bolts and see what I come up with, maybe someone has the same info on our 6's so we can cross-reference it

The reason I'm doing this is to try and come up with some thing that's readily available for our sixes....appreciate your help

It's all good. I feel at home with the /6 guys.

He he he he. Same crud spelling, must have got him some learning from the same school system I did!

When I was at Clifford's me and another gentleman got all the bolts from all sixes and made kits using ARP bolts or studs. Let me find my notes tonight and see what I can come up with for sizing. ARP did not make a kit taylor made for the sixes as far as I know (they might now) so we got all the bulk numbers and made our own kits.

Thanks Phil !!!!!
Here are the measurements I took of the 200 bolts.
  • HEAD BOLTS
    7/16"-14 = diameter/thread
    11/16" = wrench size
    3.464" = length(overall)

    MAIN BOLTS
    7/16"-14 = diameter/thread
    3/4" = wrench size
    2.992" = length(overall)

NOTE:Please take into account two things, one that I'm really good with conversions from metric to inches. Second I believe that the lenght of the studs need to be longer than the bolts, but by how much?????

I e-mailed Clifford a while back and they were no longer selling the kits....bummer....

Thanks for the help.

This what I have from my old notes....

ARP # AP 4.75L (STUD)
ARP # APW-1316N (WASHER)
ARP # APN-58 (NUT)

These are 7/16 and requires 14 of each.

I wish I had my own business as I would then supply these hard to find parts and info. Oh well.

Hope this helps

Phil...why not? If I recall Clifford charged a bunch for their studs and bolts sets.....even the ARP rod bolts which thanks to this forum everybody knows they can be sourced from 289 V8's.....

Thanks for the info BTW

8)

I have a question on this same subject.

The head bolts off of my 200 are Grade 8. Is that normal?

Also is it necessary for us to have the shank just below the head of the bolt (the part where it necks down)?

Also is the problem finding a place that has the nuts and bolts?

No start up cash. I have all the knowlegde and contacts alas no cash for start up. We did main studs too. I will look those up as well.
