Hello,
Reading up on the brake questions got me wondering about some of the brakes available in Australia. I have a Comet which is basically the same car as a Maverick only is made by Mercury. What I'm looking for is to convert the front drum brakes to disk. Everybodys been doing the Granada swap here in the states but the kicker for me is that I want a four lug set up. Running a six I really don't need five lug wheels and I think rebuilding the four lug set up correctly will yield a car that handles very well as well as saving a little rotating weight. My theory is that I will perform better using the four lugs. So, any chance of fitting a Capri or Cortina disk brake set up on the front of this old Comet?

OK, the Cortina's not a good swap. But why go to 5 lug? I would think a properly set up 4 lug system would be light, tight and nimble. So besides 10 or 11" rotors up front why go 5 lug? I ask for the sake of discussion and debate.

The US 14" 4-lugs are what I call a "conversion" rim. The centre is identical to a 13" but the 14" rim has a deeper stepdown in the middle band to meet this smaller centre.

They won't clear Aussie Falcon 4-stud discs with the caliper on. Caliper removed - sure; I've experimented. But no go - not even with some grinding, it's way off. You'd need Aussie 14" rims, and I'm sure you've seen the current thread in the Oz sixes section.

My understanding of your local SSBC kit is that the caliper is rather lower profile and the rotors may be smaller, too.

Regards, Adam.
