Autolite 1101 Dashpot

I have an Autolite 1101 for manual transmissions. It does not have the anti-stall dashpot on the passenger side of the carb.

I want to use it on a car with an automatic (fordomatic) trans. Will it work even though it does not have the dashpot diaphram?

If not, then why not? There are MANY carbs that are used on both auto and manual that do not have a dashpot mechanism.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
~Jim

I think you are right, you can probably get by without it. It's just that in some situations coming off the throttle with the car in gear there is still a little drag on the engine from an automatic transmission/converter that could cause the engine to sputter or die. You can compensate with a slightly higher idle, richer mixture, or even put a throttle level dashpot on. This is what Ford did in some situations where they used a non-dashpot carb with an auto trans, they mounted a small anti-stall dash pot on the throttle linkage itself on the carb.

The 66 Mustang (auto trans) we have currently has an autolite 1100 on it and it's the non-dashpot version. I've really only had it running for about a week so far after bringing it out of storage and fixing it up, but she's running great with this carb and we're doing plenty of starting / stopping in traffic in addition to idling at lights (so far so good). The idle speed on this car is ~700 RPM.

Great. Thanks for the replys. They are very helpful. I guess I will go ahead and rebuild/install the carb then.
