big bell small bell

Ok. How can I tell if I have a small bell or a big bell on my 200 i6? My Starter is above the oil pan. More towards the top of the motor. And depending on what it is, What trans can i get to fit it?

8) you have the small bellhousing. the big bellhousing has the starter in the same location as a V8.

If that is the case listen to this. I looked at the head casting numbers and I am sure I have a big bell 6. The trans bell on this does not look right, and from what you told me, it is a small bell on the tranny. Heck the starter is right under the exhaust manifold. I can feel a couple of bolt holes in the block right below the head on either side. This is where I am assuming that the Big Bell would bolt on to. But lower than that and in tworards the middle a little is where the top bolts on the bell that is in there are in the block. Is it possible that someone drilled and tapped new holes in the block to take a small bell? And if so... Would a small bell from a 4cyl 4 speed bolt to it if that bell is the same as the small bell that is on the c3 that is in there? Mass confusion going on here. But if the small 4 cyl bell will work, hey I can go with it. The only tranny i cna find around here right now.

Also i thought of, will the flywheel for the 4cyl t-4 trans bolt to the crank or am i going to have to do some mods for it too?

You guys have this a little confused. Actually there are three MAIN bell housings (with lots of little variantions).

The small bell goes from approx. 1960 to 1967.

The big bell goes from approx. 1968 to 1981.

And the low mount starter (V/8 style) goes from approx. 1980 to 1983.
