block coolant passage cleaning

hello everyone,

just new here but have owned a 66 mustang delux pony interior for 9 years and just two years ago got my first Inline ford engine that came factory with my 65 coupe.

motor was running fine the last two years after a stock rebuild I did. at the time one of the small coolant passages in the front of the block was completely rusted so drilled it out and ran fine and only noticed over heating on real hot summer california days especially if stuck in freeway traffic.

so this build I'm going all out with the six and got a large log modified for 2v heavily ported and will use a holly 2305 progressive 2 barrel 500cfm, large stainless valves, dual springs 264/264 108 cam so this should make the 200 scream.

I have the block stripped mines water pump. I put plexi glass over the block, sealed water passages with silicone and bolted down to clean the semi heavy rust in the block.

first treatment was murriatic acid 10:1 with water I soaked it for an hour, rinsed, neutralized with water and baking soda several times. it didn't do wonders but did knock out lots of sand size pieces of rust. I would not recommend this way because I've used hcl acid on many cast iron parts even really nasty carburetors with good results but I didn't want to leave that heavy acid in my engine long.

second time phosphoric acid 3:1 with water and I let this soak 3 hours then dumped it and definatly came out more of a dirty rust color then with murriatic. I then rinsed, neatralize and rinsed.

I followed that with evaporust over night for the final cleaning in hopes that will get It better to fix over heating issues before I hopefully get it to the machine shop tomorrow.

any experience with this out there? should I have done the murriatic wash longer? should I possibly leave the phosphoric acid in over night then evaporust or is that not neccesary? thought and experiences on cleaning out this rust please would be greatly appreciated!

so after yesterdays acid cleaning I let it soak in evapo rust over night and in the morning drained it and it was a mild black color with lots of rust in it and this worked the best I could actually see the cast iron now looking down into the coolant passages.

I'm doing one more soak in evapo rust approx. 6 hours then dropping it off at the machine shop tonight and I'm hoping to have it back running this month with the new large log, 2305 holley, intake 2v , mod, headers, aluminum radiator and more moms to come in the future :) I don't know how to post pics on here but for anyone cleaning rust stay away from the acid and evapo rust all the way!

and I'm really happy it came out very clean so this was a good non messy way to block the passages and let it soak along with spinning the water pump with a drill in between to agitate and was even able to get it to my machinist today so try the evapo rust if you run into this problem because all the rust came out.

this was just after the evapo rust I took it straight to the machine shop after and hey threw it right in their pressure washer and it was looking great. ill post a pic when I get it back, have it painted and ready for assembly.

no before pics of inside but you can see the rust in the jackets under the plexi glass but no before pics unfortunately but ill just post one more pic and be done with this thread and on to my build thread next. hopefully this will help someone in the sane boat down the road looking to clean it. I was planning to even media blast it after but was not even neccesary all rust cleared out

I used the "thumbnail" form of link because your images are too big for this forum.
As most are, but we won't go there...

When you post pictures, use the 'preview' first. It will tell you if they are too big. Reduce them in size until they show up. Generally, if you have standard size options, choose 'medium'.
