Anyone ever run a blower on a big 6?

After talking it over a couple times with Ted, I decided to run an M90 blower (most likely off a T-Bird Supercoupe) on a 240 for my Falcon dream. For those that don't know- a '64 or 5 Falcon, rear axle moved forward about 10", front subframe replaced w/ lite-weight tube frame & strait axle from a Econoline van. Usually called an altered or match racer.

Granted I don't even have the car yet, but I have located an engine, strait axle, & rear. I'm looking for some insight as to potential pro's & cons on running a blower on the 240. I realize this will be all fabrication work to mount it. Prolly gonna build the intake out of an EFI lower intake manifold.

What I'm wondering is some of y'alls opinions on carburation, cam, head work, etc. Will the stock 240 bottom end handle the M90? I'm wanting a fast motor, but still driveable on the street.

Heck, I've even thought of flipping my motor plans- blown BB6 in the Stude, dual quad FE in the Falcon.

Any feedback will be helpful. Just lookin' for general thoughts.Thanx.

302 pistons???

Can you run the stock rods w/ 302 pistons?

I think I'd prefer the draw-thru setup over the blow thru. It just seems easier to maintain & engineer. I'm thinking of running dual 2V Holleys. Any advantage to running a single 4V instead?

Thats one reason I went ahead & posted these ???'s- I'm trying to figure how much boost, cam, carb, etc. to run. I can't be the only one out there that wants to run a blower on the big 6.

I want a slightly lopey idle, so I'll prolly drop a perf. cam in it. Who custom grinds cams for the sixes? But I like the low-buck idea, just 'cause I'm cheap. :P

What are you going to use for the Crank pulley?
Are there any real choices for drive systems?

I had looked into the gilmore type belt used on Harleys. It's strong enough but the pullies would have to be hand made (lathe time) and I don't know how well the bottom pulley would last, since it's mount would be well off center.

I keep bidding on all the Eaton 112's that I can. Sooner or later I'll get one.
That is a CHEAP one.

Can you run a draw thru configuation with an M90 style blower? More specifically can it handle fuel running thru it?

I just don't know.

Belts & stuff are the things I'm gonna have to figure out as I go along. I saw a website w/ a Dodge "rat rod" (looked like a T Bucket) that had a slant 6 & a roots-type blower. But I can't find it again. Anyone seen the one I'm talkin' about? I'd love to pick his brain.

I want the scoop stickin' out the passenger side anyway, Ted. So mounting the M90 on the right side is no prob. :D

Whats a realistic rev limit for a built 240? I know its more than the 300s.

From Mike's question, can I assume the Supercoupes use a blow-thru system?

How much boost would be good for this thing? How much do the SC's run?

Buickroadster used to have a blower on his 265 "hemi" six. Would that be it? I have somewhere (old) pictures of a T-bucket with 4-71 on an Aussie 202 GM six.

Adam.

The Dodge I'm thinking of was from the US, I think. Any links or sites that have blown sixes of any brand are of iterest to me. I'm looking to learn how people mounted their blowers, how the pulley system worked, what they learned to avoid, etc. Think I'll do a good search & see if I can come up w/ that ol' Dodge.

Ya, the Supercoupes are injected after the blower, so it's not an issue.

And they run 12psi stock.

Yep, my super coupe turns a Nice 12psi @ 5000rpm stock and I have 10psi Off Idle. 232CID V6 should be compairable to a 240CID I-6. Funny to see another Supercoupe owner here! I'm Debating a M90 or a T04-E turbo for my 93' 300-6 f150 2x4 I just got (converting to MAF using a 93' cougar MAF V6 computer and a fordchip)

A blown 6cyl altered?.....I LOVE IT!!!
Love live the straight axle!!!
I'm a drag racer and a ford guy but I bought a mid 40's dodge running gear to build a front engined dragster.(project# 678,924)
All I have left now is the front axle/steering box/shock mounts, a 9", and a choice of 2.3,300,302,351w,460.
I seen an early 60's falcon panel delivery with straight axle and a 289,it looked cool too.

Thanx, goinbroke2. I had considered dropping my FE into the Falcon idea, & running the blown 6 in my Studebaker project, but I won't do it. The blown 6 altered will be just fine. The FE is better suited for a truck, anyway. And I want a street scoop popping out of the hood offset on the altered.

All the info I looked at says to run about 5 pounds of boost, & keep the compression at 9.0:1 or below (8.0:1 is prefered).

I still may look into a custom tube axle. May be more exspen$ive but they gotta be at least 150 lbs. lighter. No matter, the altered is a ways off- plenty of time for decisions. :D

I got the plans for building a T-bucket from Total Performance and it shows how to build a front axle(along with the rest), not as scary or complicated as you might think.
I wanted an original though as I'm not into chrome or glitter. Factory straight axle and painted steel rims, maybe flat black primer too!

Sounds cool. I love rat rods & bare-bones hot rods.

If I go w/ a tube axle, it will not be chromed. I'd be interested in seeing the axle plans you have. How much did they cost you?

Flat black is the best color!

Hey Stude,

Go and look at one of the old Postal Delivery Jeeps.
They had a straight axle that would be perfect. The axle alone weighs about 35 pounds, tube steel and plenty strong.

Darn strait!!

Except I'm gonna kill imports with a blown big six!!

M90's can be adapted to about anything..

I have two mounted on my tuned port.

Bolting one on to a big six shouldn't be to hard.

Use late model brackets and accesories as a base and adapt from there.

Late model serpintine belt pulleys work best.

Be aware that M90's are loud! I have short 3" tubes with K/N cones to mine and the whine is very loud. I am considering longer tubes with the filters placed further forward and down. And add a second BOV, convert to a recirculating system. cheers, Bob

All I can say is-

Thats one bad-a$$ lookin' set-up!

Hey, Ted- don't you think a strait axled car with a scoop sticking out is gonna be warning enuff?? I plan on running an adjustable gear drive, & SATURN5 says the Eatons are loud. Plus I'll have a set of dumps to bypass the mufflers. If they need anymore warning than that, I'll be up against someone really off....

SATURN5- Thanx for the input & advice.

:rolflmao:

I've never been a big fan of nitrous, Ted! Thats cheating!!!!!
