bogging down when accelerating fast...

starts great, idles great, put in gear, idles great, when you accelerate slowly and get up to speed it drives great, but if you mash on it, or if you are stopped and mash on it, it wants to spit and sputter around and once in a while quit running then i have to start it back and then it runs great till i mash on the gas again..... i have advanced the timing a little to get it running smoother, could i have it too advanced??? is this something that would cause this??? could i have a too lean or rich mixture?? would this cause this?? those are the only two things i have adjusted, so one of them has caused the problem....or maybe the car just needs driven, i drove it to the gas station to fill it up with 93 octane and it ran good until i tried to mash on the gas on the way home to see how it was running, then it spit around like it was shaking or having a seisure, it's aggrevating me.... HELP!!!!

Maybe the accelerator pump is shot. It's a little rubber valve in the carb could worn out. Supposed to deliver a shot of gas when you hit the accelerator.

just had it rebuilt....got to be something else.... any other adjustments or over adjustments that could cause this.... could fuel mixture being to lean or rich cause this

Hey, I had the same problem last summer. It was not the pump that was the problem, it was the small passages that take the fuel from the pump to the carb. Remove the carb and spray cleaner through the small passages, try and make sure there is no dirt or grit on the float or weight. This should solve the problem, if not, check the linkage to the pump. I am sure it is associated with the pump, however.

Yah the first time I put mine back together I didn't get the linkage hooked up inside the carb. Sometimes you have to rotate the parts around just the right way during re-assembly.

What is your idle timing set at?? And is it advanceing properly when accelerating?

In addition to the other suggestions, if the car has been sitting and the gas has been in the tank for a while there could be water and rust.
This could also account for sputtering and bucking, hard start symptoms.
Gas line anti-freeze, fuel system cleaner additives might work. And a fresh tank of gas.

don't have a clue about idle setting....kinda did it by ear... i just drove it up to the gas station to fill it up with new 93 octane gas and it drove great, the only thing is it just sounds like it wants to quit ONLY when i really stomp on the gas...if i accelerate normal it's great....

I had the same thing with my Falcon when I first got it, figured that carb cleaning could be the right thing to do and yes those little passages are the most critical!
This one had been sitting for atleast + 2 years and the gas inside the tank, pump and carb are pretty much turned to nothing. Water is a big problem because it can sit in front of a passage and not let any gas thru either.
This is what I found in my carb,

checked it out last night and the carb is shooting the stream of gas thru the carb whenever i hit the accelerator, it's just when i hold it to the floor it's acting like it's choking to death, spit spit spit, then i let off and just give it a little gas and it's fine....it gets up to about 45 and cruises with ease, but when i want it to kick down to go up a hill or speed up it just sputters around like it's not getting hardly any gas at all....i took the carb off and looked thru it, sprayed a little carb cleaner thru it and tried to see if there was anything out of the ordinary in there, but didn't take it apart yet....tried to see if i could do anything else first...
Question, it kinda sounds like when you have the choke on with a chainsaw of 4 wheeleer when you gas it, it quits, that is what the car sounds like but it doesn't quit it just sputters around...... could my choke be staying on?? i don't really know what to check to see if that could be it?? i'm clueless....

Like what was said before, just because it was rebuilt doesn't mean it was done correctly.it is most likely your carb or a vacuum leak somewhere.

also, check out your electrical:
pull your distributor cap off and check for any signs of arcing(sp?) blueish powder on the inside is a sign. pull your plugs check the color. put an ohm meter to your wires to check the resistance.

Putting fresh gas in does not remove the water already present.
A bottle of gas line antifreeze is like $2.

It sounds to me like its running lean and since you said you were messing with the fuel mixture, I would try richening it up a little. If thats not it, it has to be a vacuum leak or a clogged passage.

How about a vaccum leak?

\\my 61 would bog if i tried to gun it and i changed the vacuum advance module and it run much better. Plus there cheap under 20 bucks at that price it's worth a shot

thanks for all the help..will try and check vacuum stuff this weekend...
would a fuel pump going bad cause this problem if it's not a vacuum leak? how would i check that? when i give it gas it's shooting into the carb so does that mean the fuel pump is doing it's job right?
