Hello all. I am new to the forum I stumbled onto it a few days ago.

I have a 69 Bronco, I listed the specs on the introdutcions page this post is going to be long enough.

I am just looking for some affordable or dare I say free (I am in the Air Force so money is not in great abundance) performance mods that I can do on my own in my driveway and with minimal down time so the wife can have her van back.

I know some of you will say just swap to a V-8 but that is expensive (see above).

I am handy with tools and can do most things so any suggestions and sources would be great.

All I am really looking for is better gas mileage and to be able to hold my head up on the highway (4.11 gears and a 100hp does not a fast combo make).

Also where can I get a new oil pan? I have looked a just about all of the parts houses I can think of.

Thanks in advance

Paul

Paul, its good to see another bronco on here. I have a 74 with a 200. One really good source of info is classicbronco.com Lots of good parts cheap and lots of good info. Look for post by Papitt. He has several I6 broncos. The basic bolt on upgrades are a new dizzy. Either Petronics, duraspark or DUI. I went with a duraspark II out of a 79 fairmont. If I had it to do again I would go for the DUI drop in. I would have spent about $50 more and had a lot less hassel. I also added a weber 32/36 carb on a stovebolt adapter. It has much better responce and a little better top end but I am having some tuning problems. With our 4.11 gears and three on the tree (thats what mine has) 70 mph is running pretty high rpm's. Around 3500. I run the interstate at about 60-65mph and just let folks go around. I also run 31" tires. 32" or even 33's would give you a little better highway speed but would cost you off road and at take off. Hope some of this helps.

Steve,

Thanks for the info. I have a Carter YF carb. So where do I find the adapter for the carb, never heard of it?

I am running 31's now with maybe 33's in the future, I'm not looking to do any light-to-light racing so I'm not concerned with that.

Oh yah she is also my daily when she runs.

Steve,

can you post the link to the site I keep coming up blank?

I got my adapter of the for sale forum on this board. I think I paid $20 shipped. They come up every once in a while. Some one can also direct you to stovebolt web page.

http://classicbroncos.com/ is the early bronco forum.

http://classicbroncos.com/ is another good site that has adapters and carb stuff

The perfomance shop on this site is probably the most helpful I have delt with. Hope these help.

Howdy Paul;

And welcome to the Forum.

An even simplier upgrade for you to consider for your 170 is to step up to a Carter YF carb from a 200. You will be going from 150 cfm to 187. that's enough to notice. It will be a direct bolt off-bolt on upgrade, cost will vary depending on your source for a 200 YF, and shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to swap and tune.

Add an additional 5 degrees of initial advance over stock specs and enjoy.

David,

Thanks. I already have a YF that was on there when I got the truck but I did not know about the timing. Things like that are why I signed up here.

Paul.

Howdy Back:

The Carter YF came in two sizes. The difference is internal. They all look alike from the outside.

The YF for a 170 flows 150 CFM while a YF for a 200 is rated at 187 CFM. In your case, moving from a YF from a 170 to one from a 200 will give a nice performance increase.

First, Welcome to the forum, and Thanks for serving 8)

Since money is tight (isn't it always?) and Mama needs her mobility, I would suggest just getting it running properly with your stock equipment first, then look into upgrading performance.

The Duraspark 2 ignition upgrade is quite popular and works well. I did this swap on my 300 using a TFI coil and the GM HEI ignition module. Works great and you can get most of the parts from the junkyard if you are patient. Check out www.gofastforless.com for more details.

Since you mentioned fuel economy, stay away from big, fat, wide tires. They will absolutely KILL your power and economy. Likewise with lifting the body for that "cool" look. Keep it low, run stock size tires at high pressure, and keep your speed down. Bummer, there really is no free lunch.

Yes sir, I have a '73 w/ a turbocharged 200, if you really want some power addition. Yes, start w/ the timing, advance it say 4-5 degrees or as high as you can go without it pinging under a load. I ran a YF off of a 240 big inline six and really noticed the difference (seat of the pants) before the turbo was installed.

Without a lift, the biggest tires you can use w/ stock rims are 31x10.5. I have 3.5" lift and a one inch body lift and I am running 33x10.5x15 tires, they keep my cruise at 2500 rpm and @ 63 mph (that with the standard 3-speed tranny).

Basically make sure all components are in proper running order (ignition, timing, fuel system, etc...) and you will have fun with the bronco, I know I have. Good luck with your project... Oh yeah and welcome the the forum.

Kirk,

I was just looking at your pics again and was wondering where the intake cover came from. I am trying to fab my own remote intake system.

Paul, that is a Turbonetics brand intake bonnet. They have them at Summit Racing, and now at a lower price ($85.00, I think). You'll have to fabricate a new base to fit the one barrel, or put on a 2-barrel adaptor and a carb to fit and wa-la.
