put rebuit c4 tranny in, was running good..took to person to rebuild brakes and put a new exhaust system on...got done today been about a month or so... Started her up running great, put into gear didn't want to go into reverse or drive, finally did, got going about 1/4 mile down the road and kicked out of gear...wouldn't go back in! Turned off started again and it went into gear for a second then kicked back out.... something wrong with tranny i would say, but don't have a clue what to check???? is it just slipping in and out?? what would cause this...i have enough fluid, new to everything else..help!!!!

I had some similar issues, turned out to be the torque converter.

When you rebuilt the trans did you put fluid in the torque converter?

Yeah I don't know precisely what your problem is but improper fluid levels can cause all kinds of wierd things to happen. I assume you checked it once early on while you were running it, check it again cause the fluid has to fill up all the empty spots on a complete rebuild.

If you are saying the lever won't physically click to certain positions then I don't know what the heck to think. That valve had a flat spot as I remember and goes in only one way. If fluid level really isn't your problem there are a couple different valves in the valve body that could be reversed. Or it could be a band that is slipping. Without pulling out my manual I couldn't tell ya. I have an interview at Cummins Monday so I better get to bed. If noone has better ideas I'll look harder Monday Night.

Did you check he vacuum line to the tranny modulator valve? It could have been disconnected while working on the car.

Also, you need to make sure your linkage is set right, my tranny would not shift properly when I put it in at first, it would shift from first to neutral unless I floored it. adjusted linkage twice, and finally it's alright.

The torque converter fills itself as soon as the car starts.

Did you get a warranty???

First check fluid level.
Do you have any movement in manual low/
Hook up a pressure guage to the oil pressure port. Do you have any line pressure at all?
If you have line pressure it could be the converter. If no line pressure, pump problems or a massive internal leak.
Hope you have warranty on the transmission. Good luck William

will check modulator first and make sure i haven't lost a vacuum!! i have plenty fluid and converter was full...It's just weird because It goes in to gear when first started but kicks out after you give it some fuel...thinking i'm loosing a vacuum somewhere i hope it's that easy....will check some stuff out on monday or tuesday when i can get back to it..i'll keep everyone updated...

Sounds like you have line pressure initally but then loose it.

If you have a warranty take it back to the builder.

If you don't have a warranty, drop & see if the filter is clogged with either metal or debris.

If metal the converter has probably failed.

If the filter is clogged you can try a new filter but this is a bandaid fix.

I feel you have serious problems. William
