I've got everything preped for the rebuild of my '63 I6,170 engine. I was doing a dry run on a couple of things and I'm stumped on the cam shaft / timing chain gear installation.
I se a keyway for the gear. I see a round hole at the correct end of the cam. A hole on the radial side of the cam.
Does a retaining pin go in there or what? What holds the gear to the cam?
Please help..ZZ
I looked in the manual and couldn't find a thing about what holds the cam. Other than a bolt and washer, that screws into the axial end of the cam.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED 2 CAMS,BOTH CAME WITHOUT THIS DOWEL PIN. THE PIN CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE OLD CAMSHAFT, THE SIZE IS .250 BY .375 I THINK. LIKE A DUMMY I THREW OUT MY OLD CAMSHAFT. UNLESS I MAKE A PIN WHERE CAN YOU PURCHASE IT. ANY ADVISE WOULD BE APPERCIATED.

Yes, there is a dowel pin that goes on the cam shaft.

If you throw it out...have no idea, but you may want to check your cam shaft company, they my be able to hook you up. Or, you can always get some round stock, and cut it to size.

you should be able to buy just the dowel pin.

Service manuals say the dowel pin is only used to align the gear and the cam, and that its not needed when you tighten the cam bolt. Ive seen what happens if you dont use the dowel pin and you will surely want to use one.

You must use the dowel pin. The cam gear will not stay in place with just the bolt.

Also, there is a spacer behind the dowel that has to be there. Some aftermarket cams have the spacer incorporated, but most do not. Without it, the cam gear will bind on the retainer when you tighten it down.

The old dowel pin will just pull out with vise grips, using a twisting motion. The spacer should just slide off after that.

Good stuff..Thanx. I'm going to get with my machinist tomorrow..ZZ

Mine has no pin either the old one looks well used if i get it out do I then tap it in gently or get it pressed in. Is there anything I should use to help it stay in?

THE CAMSHAFT DOWEL PIN IS AVAILABLE IN THE PIONEER LISTING.
PART #PF200-25 THE DIMENSIONS ARE, DIAMETER .255 BY .314 IN LENGTH. THE COST IS $.58 DEPENDING WHERE YOU PURCHASE THE PIN.
I THOUGHT I WOULD LIST THIS TO HELP MANY AFTERMARKET CAMSHAFT BUYERS. I CALLED COMPETION CAMS & THEY SAID THE PIN WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE OLD CAMSHAFT. I SENT AN E-MAIL TO CLAY SMITH CAMS TO GEORGE & HE NEVER HAD THE COURTSY TO ANSWER MY REQUEST. I BELIEVE CRANE CAMS SUPPLIED THE PIN WITH THEIR CAMS.IM NOT TRYING TO BE PICKY,BUT THE AFTERMARKET SEEMS TO CARE LESS ONCE YOU PURCHASE THE CAM.
I ADVISED MIKE OF MY FIND. AT FSPP & I'M SURE HE WILL HAVE THE PIN AVAILABLE. HOPE THIS HELPS. WILLIAM

I read your response and I believe I called Pioneer. They like alot of other people didn't have it. In case I talking about someone else. Can I have that number for the future?
What I ended up doing. I had my machinist fabricate a combination dowel and square key to assemble the timing gear onto the cam. Looks and feels freakin perfect..ZZ
