what size cam should i put in my 250 I6, its going to be a daily driver but i have plans to make some perfomance upgrades. should i go with the 260 or the 252 hydrolic cam (CompCams)?

Any reason why you are going with comp cams? Classicinlines.com has a wide variety of good camshafts for our motors. Probably the best one for your application would be the CSC-264 which is very similar to comp cams 260 cam.

Neither of the comp cams, both are old designs.

As Gene said go with the 264 from Mike at classicinlines.com

I'm running Classicinline's CSC-264/274 (110*) Hydraulic Dual Pattern Camshaft with 8.9 to 1 compression for a daily driver with great results. Using DUI distributor with no abnormal wear patterns on the gears. Cleaned up the valve pockets, some gasket matching with a port divider and 3-angle valve job. Also, using adjustable 1.5 rocker arms and stock valve train. Later I may opt for 1.6 rockers, stiffer springs and additional porting. Can't wait for adj. timing set to get produced. Got great customer service from Mike. You can't go wrong.

I'm running a CompCams 252H in an older 200 rebuild and there isn't much noticeable difference from stock- maybe slightly more midrange and top-end. If I had it to do over and CompCams was the only choice I'd go with the 260H. That said, I agree with everyone else- CompCams has been selling those same cams for at least 30 years, take advantage of some more modern technology and go with a split pattern cam like Classic Inlines offers. CompCams knows that split profile cams work in applications like ours (look at their small block Ford offerings) but haven't invested in applying that technology to our engines. Reward those that have.

8) the comp cams high energy cam series is a very good choice, but as stated it is rather old technology. the cams you find on the classicinlines site are clay smith designed cams. clay smith has been around the hot rod world for as long as vic edelbrock jr( a very long loooonnggg time). clay smith has ground cams for many winning race teams over the years, and continues to be at the leading edge of cam technology.

Indeed he has. I can remember building plastic models of racing cars back in the mid-1960's and some of the kits included tiny little Clay Smith Cams decals in the decal set for the car. They looked like this:

If you are my age or older, you may recall seeing some of these yourself back then ... or even earlier. By the 1960's the company had already been in business for well over a decade!

so whats a good choice for my daily driver? 2.83:1 gears, stock C4 and converter, 9.7-10:1 CR, long tube header, DSII w/ msd. future plans include a T5 swap, around 3.50 rear gears, and 3 weber 34 carbs.

i was going to get the 264 clay smith cam from classicinlines.

I heard a 200 with a schneider 262/282 110lc it had a manual so I dont know about it in a c4. Maybe someone will chime in but I was thinking on askingmike about a grind like that from clay smith cuz id much rather give mike the business.

The 260 Comp is still a good cam especially for a daily type driver. Anything much bigger runs into the lopey stuff. But having said that, consulting with Mike would be an excellent idea before buying anything.

Crap! Did I go with the wrong cam? I had my 200 rebuilt with the 252H, but I haven't had it running yet so I don't know how it compares. I went with the 252 because all of the charts and stuff were saying that anything bigger than that would start effecting the idle and vacuum. I didn't go with a split profile because my understanding was that those were better for a 3-1 carb setup. I will be running a stock carb with headers. Am I ok with the 252, or should I consider something else.

If you can come by a stock cam profile compare it to the 252 profile for difference. I went with the 260 as Comp's chart showed smooth idle but the next one up showed "noticeable" idle and I didn't want to get into that. I have no problem with idle or vacuum on my 300. In fact, I could idle down it to 500 rpm and it was still smooth.
