Car jumped timing again...Bad distributor?

One way to check your chain being sloppy is to check manually.

Pull the cap off the distributor and index the rotor with a witness mark.

Watching the rotor, ( you might want to disconnect the batt cable) grab the fan and rotate it by hand. Move it a little CW then CCW.

The bug should track with no backlash. The factory timing chains and gears SUCK !!

No reputable shop would do a rebuild without one, and I'll bet it was included in your anj hix.

If you end up pulling the dizzy, put back a DII. Best mod I ever made.

You may have broken the code! Hilarious actually...The guy is one sloppy writer. I looked again and it still looks like "anj hix" but I will go with eng kit.... makes sense.

I am glad to hear from your comments that it is most likely not a timing chain. I will just have to suffer through the cost and time involved with getting a new distributor and I should be good to go. I have replaced everything else so hopefully I will have some time of trouble free driving?

I am considering the DS2 but....a couple of months ago my pink resistor wire went bad. I was running a pertronix 1 with the resistor wire. It was bad intermittently so I went back to points and even removed a car alarm to try and figure out what was wrong. Now the idea of going under the dash again and bypassing the (new) resistor wire doesn't sound like a lot if fun...

DS2 requires 12 volts to coil right?

Not sure where they did the helicoil. I could kick myself for not getting more detailed info on the engine rebuild. I guess I had a lot going on at the time. It was done by a well-known speed shop in the area (CA Bay area) so I pretty sure they did a good job...

I'm going to try and pull the distributor this afternoon. I will let you guys know what I find....

Have you tried calling the shop that did the rebuild?

One option is to post your location in your signature, so members in your are can maybe help you. You never know who has a spare dizzy in his trunk.

When guessing and throwing new parts at a problem, my rule of thumb is to replace the cheapest and easiest first. Punt a couple of drops of oil down the middle of the shaft , under a little felt pad. Check for an oiling port on the side. Lubircate with a drop of oil anything that looks like a pivot. REPLACE THE VACUUM DIAPHRAGM.

As for the "Pink Wire," get an external ballast resistor, and try running a wire directly from the "I" post of the solenoid. Good luck. :D

The Speed Shop (Riparetti) was well known around the Santa Cruz area. Of course, they are out of business now!

I'm going to start a new thread about changing my distributor...

Thanks!
