car stumbling at idle

Okay I'm pretty sure someone else asked this question but I couldn't find it. Just a couple days ago my car was running fine then it died while sitting at a light but it started up and ran fine after that. Yesterday it started up fine in the morning. Then I let it sit for a few hours, started it up again and it would run if I step on the pedal but at idle it would run very rough then die. I bought a rebuild kit for the carb but its too late to do that now. My question is, am I heading in the right direction with rebuilding the carb or is there something more I should check? I did check for vacuum leaks and the distributor and plugs but they seem to check out fine. Any help would be appreciated! thanks

your timing may be off or the idle speed screw is way too loose.

It turned out to be the carb. When I took off the fuel filter it had a lot of these little black slivers in them. I dont know what that's all from. I replaced it, still had a problem so I took apart the carb and cleaned it thoroughly. I noticed that the little ball pump check thing didnt have the weight on top so I fixed that. I'm not sure how important that is since its been running for years without it but I replaced it anyway.

So anyway, all that I needed to do was clean and rebuild the carb.

I just have to ask. Did you smell gasoline? Did the carb give off a gurgling sound? What I'm getting at, maybe the your carb float needle has debris in it..ZZ

No gurgling sound that I know of but then again I didnt have enough time or a helper to start the car and run to the engine before it would die. It did shoot gas up out of the carb when it would die though. At least now I have the problem fixed. The car runs much smoother now.
