Carb mounting bolt holes different?

My 78 engine is at the shop right now being put into my 62 Comet and the guy says that the bolt holes are spaced farther apart than the ones on my old 69 engine. I never heard of anything like this so I went down there and sure enough they were farther apart so now my carb won't fit on it. He said he can drill some new holes on there so that my carb will be able to fit. Has anybody ever heard of this happening before? Also, my vacuum advance is bad and I need to know if there i diference between the vacuum advance on the load o matic dizzy and a regular dizzy. I don't know which one I have so I need to make sure if they are different. Also he said I can put a vacuum canister in the vacuum line of my fuel pump and it will make my wipers work better, is this true? Thanks.

Sure, you're replacing a 1.5" carb opening with a 1.75" carb opening and that's why you have wider bolt spacing. You need the later, larger carb to take advantage of the increased throttle bore. No need to choke down a better breathing head with a smaller carb.

By the way, Ford went to the larger throttle bore sometime late '69 so your old '69 head must have been an early version with the 1.5" throttle bore. All 200/170/144 heads had the 1.5" throttle bore prior to the '69 "M" head.

Yes, adding a vacuum canister will help with vacuum wipers. A better option is to convert to electric wipers. There were optional single and two speed electric wipers offered on your car, and they are frequently available on eBay.

The thing is that I do have the 69 M head, that's why I thought it was wierd that 77 head has wider spacing. I am going to be selling the old engine if anybody wants it, I need to get rid of it because i have no room to store it.

As for the carb, I plan on going to a H/W 5200 2bbl as my next upgrade but for now I just don't have enouh money because the engine and exhaust has cost me more than anticipated.
