Carb preference

Which carb is better/more dependable-reliable? An Autolite 1100 manual choke or Carter RBS with Heat Tube choke? I have already switched over to the 68 dizzy, so I can run either. I am having a few little issues with the Carter. Does not like cold mornings. Has a slight hesitation sometimes in the beginning of accelleration, especially if it is a hard accelleration. Car still has a slight miss. I will have to rebuild the Autolite, but a kit is only 14 bucks.

Have you tried adjusting the cold choke setting of the Carter RBS and has it been rebuilt lately? As to most dependable-reliable it all depends on their condition both are very good if they aren’t worn out. The simplest of course is the Autolite and usually is slightly better in economy department. For better performance a Carter YF is hard to beat.

you can always ask pony carbs to rebuild your auto 1100, I have had horrible luck with auto choke but that's me... IMO i'd stick with the auto 1100, but that's becuase my only other experience was a holley 1942.

Well I rebuilt the Autolite 1100 and installed an Edlebrock Choke cable. The car is running pretty good, except I am still getting a lot of white smoke at idle. The engine runns much smoother and idles better. I am wondering if I should switch back to the LOM now that I have the right Carb on it.

Blue smoke = burning oil (worn valve guides or rings)
Black smoke= burning too much fuel (running rich)
White smoke= burning water (steam)

Unless the engine hasn't warmed up yet and is just boiling off condensation in the exhaust, white smoke usually means a blown head gasket, sometimes a cracked head or block. You need to do a compression test on the cylinders and cooling system.

No it is not steam, it is rich fuel. I need to get a light and set the timing and adjust the mixture once true timing has been set. But for now it is running much better.
