will not start cold at all...probably a problem with choke... i can spray a little starting fluid on the carb and it starts right up with no problem...i haven't had the carb rebuilt but did put in a new "little round pushy thing" (can't tell i'm new at this can you) :) into where the choke is connected on the carb behind the 4 little screws, maybe i didn't get the big spring back in the right place when i took it apart...would that cause this problem of not choking right? If i did take the carb off and have it rebuilt what would be a good price for this type of work???? thanks for the help for the rookie..... you guys have been a big help on all the other stupid questions i've asked, so thanks again in advance

I am having the exact same trouble with mine. I've rebuilt it, but I believe that I need to replace everything from the choke housing back. Sucks.

Possible solutions, so far as I can tell:
buy new carb from autozone for about $80 (I'd like to not do this)

Replace the black cap and the spring - hard to find at a parts store, as most parts desk guys are dumb, and don't know what I'm talking about when I ask for it.

save like crazy and do major upgrades in the sping when Mike starts selling the aluminum cylinder head (and that cool looking 3xTBI setup!)

I'm hoping that someone will come up with a better solution, as I would like to drive mine until I can afford to fix it up, as paying insurance on a car on the curb sucks quite badly.....

Before you replace the carb, or even rebuild it, I would double check the choke is set right as long as you didn't change anything else on the carb.

Yes, if the spring is not put in and set correctly it will cause hard starting when cold. Make sure the spring coils in the correct direction (don't remember off the top of my head) and is set correctly. Your manual will fill in the details. Cheap and easy fix.

does the big part or the little part go into the carb first....when i took it apart it kind of jumped out of there :) and i didn't remember which way it exactly went in there.... does it just sit in there or is there something that is supposed to connect too or something has been mentioned about coiling it into something...Help...

I rebuilt a few before and I know if you read the manual or the flyer that comes with your rebuilt kit, it will tell you exactly how to do it. I aint no car mechanic but logical thinking and knowing how to read the manual, you'll be fine!

If this is an 1100 with spring coil inside a black plastic cap, that pulls off when it heats up, you can see which way it goes by removing the spring and heating it on a stove burner or in hot water or something. Then you figure out which way the choke pull off lever pulls off the choke.
The spring can fall out of the slot that anchors it inside the cap. You may have lost the pulloff function due to this problem and if you can get it re-engaged, then you adjust the tension by rotating the black cap clockwise or counter-clockwise.

If you loosen up the screws on the black cap and rotate the cap the choke should close up restricting air flow down the carb. A fair rule of thumb for adjusting is on a cold engine around 60*F air temp, turn the adjuster to where the choke just closes. You may need to open the throttle some as you do this as the connecting linkage will keep the choke from closeing. When starting, on most carbs the throttle has to be pumped once prior to starting to allow choke to activate. Of course the spring does have to be installed properly for it to work at all.
