Can anyone tell me the difference between the stock Holley model 1904 that I have on my 1960 Mercury Comet with the 144cid and the Holley model 1908 that was on the 1961 Comet with the 177cid. A reman carb for my model 1904 is roughly $139 but the reman for the 1908 is only $64.50. Can I use the 1908 on my stock intake? What are the differences?

Thank you in advance!
Duane

Howdy Duane:

I'm on the road and don't have my references with me, but from memory (That's scary) the differences between the Holley 04 and 08 are very slight. The difference would only matter at a high level concourse competition. The advantages other then cost is slightly more CFM with the 170 Holley. I'd go for it.

Adios, David

Thanks! I was begining to think no one read my message, except for the many views noted! I went ahead and ordered the 1908, hopefully I will have it before the weekend.

Thanks again

Well I recieved a reman carb, from Tomco. Apart from the carb being junk here is what I noted. The Holley Model 1908 is an eighth of an inch bigger in the throttle bore size than my stock 1904 and has an automatic choke. I think I can convert the choke to manual pretty easy, but I returned the carb so I will not know intil I recieve a new carb. All of the lines fit and my car ran great. The reman unit I recieved had a crack in the float bowl on the top where the vent is, I could have lived with that! But it pissed fuel out of the throttle shaft when you shut the car down!

Good Luck!

you might look someday into a holley 5200 from Stovebolt. Its like $65 or somethin, nice rebuilt 2 barrel. Unfortunately it will need a new distributor (great upgrade to do anyways) and a carb adapter, so its a little more to do.

Maybe the 1904 has the glass bowl and that is why the price was so much higher. I put a carb from a '60 144 on my 170 because my carb was beyond repair. They looked the same and hooked up the same way.

Nah, the Model 1904 on my 144 did't have the glass bowl. The 170 had the 1908, which is pretty identicle to the 1904, except for venturi size and auto choke. It will bolt on though! I would love to go two barrel, but I have a more door and the 2 speed! Don't think its worth the upgrade. I just want to cruise with this car! Slow and low!
