Carb Spacer

Hello, I posted about doing work on the head and while at it I am replacing a lot of coolant stuff that has been eaten alive. The tube which runs through the carb spacer and coolant passes through to go to the heater is barely there. Both ends have rusted to the point where attaching a hose risks a leak. Instead of buying a new 50 dollar part right now would it be a problem to just buy a long hose instead of a the short ones running through the passage? Basically does it run through the carb spacer for a reason.

Hot coolant runs throught the carb spacer to help atomize fuel better in the winter. Don't know where you're located, but if it's warm all year long bypassing the carb spacer won't hurt anything and probably help your mileage a bit.

Howdy SLracer:

It is a bad thing only if you experience carburetor "icing". That will occur on cool, humid days. It is caused by the cooling effect of air passing through the venturi of the carb. It actually causes ice to form on the inside of the carb. If you do get icing, you might consider ducting warm air off of the engine into the air cleaner as a preventative, rather than replacing the hot water spacer.
