Hi, guys
I am working on restoring/hotrodding a 61 Ranchero.
I bought it wth a 200cid from a 66 stang in it, Headers too.
Here is minor problem no 1 with an air cleaner on it the hood wont close. My first instinct is to put a hood scoop on, like a thnderbolt or a Tbird.
Any Ideas?

Welcome! Love the 'cheros....

Well, the 200 is no taller than the orginal engine from your '61 (either a 144 or 170). Unless your 200 is actually a 250... Is this a factory air cleaner?

There was no cleaner on it when I bought the car, there was one in the cab that I assumed was the factory cleaner, it doesn't fit nor did the smaller one I bought. it's about 2" to tall.

I don't know much about your car, I have a 66 Falcon. You might find the forums at www.tffn.net helpful. TFFN is The Ford Falcon News.

Thanks Dan, I do check TFFN from time to time. A lot of my issues are directly related to the high level of imcompetence I have in all automotive manners. It is a long sob story, a friend and I were supposed to do this project together, a male bonding ritual, then his wife got pregnant, and I have seen or heard from him twice in the last year.

Hi, Welcome to the forum.
I have a '61 Ranchero that I swapped in a 200 with no clearance problems.
Chances are that it is a 250 or that someone swapped out the carb.
Do a search on this site for info on the difference between the 200 and the 250, and on the different carbs and adapter plates that can change the height.
Also if you don't already have it, buy a manual!!!!!
These cars are really easy and fun to work on, but you need a manual for all the info on whre and what.

that's about what i was thinking
the 250 is approx an inch wider, and an inch taller than the 200, so it sits higher due to both the width and the height
what carb do you have on there? look for any serial numbers, names, etc. post 'em here

Actually, the 250 is 2" taller than the 200 and can be easily identified by the number of water pump bolts - 4 make it a 250 and 3 a 144/170/200. Five freeze plugs separate the 200 from the 144/170's three.

8) i am going to have a similar problem when i swap a 250 into my 64 falcon. i am not sure yet how i will solve it, but the falcon performance handbook has a few good ways to do just that. one is to use a late 250 head and have the carb pad machined for an autolite 2100, and use a factory style aircleaner from something like a fox body mustang(79-85 with carb).

I've heard it mentioned that the early Bronco aircleaner is of a lower profile. It should be part of the solution.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions folks, I'll get some numbers and post em here soonest.
I thought I checked the numbers on the engine with Ford Falcon Performance Manual and it was a 200, BUT, I could be wrong.
Thanks again.
