Change timing chain

I see articles about tuning in a camshaft by degreeing. If I'm just changing the chain is just lining up the marks on the sprockets sufficient?

Any time you change parts that could change the cam timing its not a bad idea to degree things but its only accurate if you have the 'cam card', that is the specs of the cam that is in the engine. With the smaller companies this is often a hand written and measured on an actual card. If you have the card its worth doing just to be sure its right, it could save you some head scratching later. Since you have the crank key, both sprockets and the cam key or pin it does not take much (even normal tolerances ) to get off enough to make a difference for some applications.

I have changed the chain and I realized that if the key ways are lined up facing each other before removing the old chain that you won't have to move anything. There was so much sludge I couldn't see the marks on the gears.

I think I might try that once I get it together to get the rest of the sludge. I get my head back on monday so hopefully it will be running by the afternoon
