My quest for the Easter long-weekend has almost begun, im going to replace the dodgey water pump on the XF.
It doesnt look to difficult, but has anyone got any hints or tips they can offer before i start pulling belts off and throwing spanners across the garage?
cheers guys.

Drain the block, if you can get the side plug out. If too hard, loosen the pump bolts with a bucket underneath. Bounce the car as it drains, and even then mop up some of the coolant still in the jacket. Scrape the surface clean, and do a test fit on the pump. Some cheaper castings need "clearancing".

Note also that some Jap pumps have different threads on the screws to the fan pulley boss. Mashed threads are ugly!

I use grease on the securing bolts, and Blue Hylomar on the gaskets. Be prepared to change out radiator hoses, too. When I refill, I squeeze the top radiator hose repeatedly because it feels good. Actually, I do it to help bleed the air from the system.

Elapsed time? With all the tools, maybe 1½ hours (with no aircon).

Enjoy it. Hopefully once every ten years...

Adam.

Mike,
The water pump replace is fairly straight forward but if it is an XF pump.
The fan hub is huge and is a left thread. You will require something to secure the hub and something large enough to undo the fan hub from the water pump.
This is a bugger to do with out some of the correct tools that fit but with patients and some thought you should be able to work it out.

Well...

I eventually did it, took me a good 3 or so hours...but yes, i replaced it.

As far as the left hand thread on the fan hub goes, whatta pr1ck to do.
If anyone wants a detailed explanation on how to do it without the correct tool, just give us a yell.

cheers gents.
