CHEAP AUTOLITE 1100 or Fluke

IIRC, that place where you have the drip is a rubber seal. They are eaten away by the alcohol in modern E85 gas.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question about a high quality rebuild kit.

NAPA? Are they still any good? I don't have one locally so I can't say. I usually got to an independent parts place in Pasadena CA that usually has OEM stuff even though it is made everywhere. Like my oil pump was FoMoCo spec with box but made in Argentina.

Figured it was just eaten away....

Correct me if im wrong but all the carb kits from the commercialezed places are just the same as any where else

Far as I know. They do differ here and there as to whether they have the steel ball or the accelerator pump spray and springs here and there. For that reason, you have to make sure you don't throw anything away when you dismantle it. And you HAVE to go chase that spring that shot away from you at some point. Guaranteed, it will not be replaceable.

Yeah I had to track down one of those steel balls when I was rebuilding my Holley... I'll be much more careful this time!!!

I do it on a large sheet of paper that is all one color, not on a newspaper. That way you can track the stuff when it wanders off or find it when it flies away.

I checked on NAPA online, BTW, just for shorts and gargles and then only have a rebuild kit for the 2v on line. You'll need to go to a Mustang parts place. Mustangs Unlimited is mostly Veight but the have the odd 1v/I6 part here and there. Larry's Mustang and Thunderbird in Fullerton. I think they can get you OEM or NOS. Virginia Mustang has mostly good stuff. Also NPD. Their stuff is mostly OEM even the repops.

O'Reilly's has a Walker kit listed

Walker Products - Carburetor Tune Up Kit
Part Number: 15253A

$18.99

That's the ones I buy...

Thats the one I bought from Orielly's I plan on starting the rebuild saturday morning,

Ok here is a question should I soak it or is the sparying of the carb cleaner enough??

spray and blow through the passages with an air hose should be enough, but I bought a can of carb cleaner years ago (seems to be still working) that I soak them in.

Alright guys

I was just telling Ron about how the install went great but it's running a little rough, hesitation on acceleration and some other things.. I have been messing with timing and the single mixture screw.. What else's should I try??

Thanks !
Ryan

Did you adjust for highest vacuum at idle? Should be about 18* or higher, unless you have a non-stock cam. When It is warm, turn the f/a mix screw IN until it starts to stumble, then back the screw off to the highest vacuum and then another 1/4 turn. Then set the idle in Drive for 750 to 800 rpm.

Then you need to time it.

Its idling at about 21 and that at idle in park at about 1000-900 rpm... I gett hesitation and rough running from it

I have done the vacuum thing!!!

Indeed he did send me an email about completing the rebuild.
Whenever I do anything that results in 'unexpected' behavior after completion I end up going back through the basics..

1. Any vacuum leaks? (spray around the carburator and the hot water adapter with some carb cleaner)
2. Are all the vacuum lines plugged into something on the other end?
3. A hesitation to me is usually a transition thing, is the accelerator pump providing the necessary squirt when you open the throttle quickly?
4. Does the behavior happen when you slowly speed up as well as when you 'stomp' it?

Failing that, I go back through the rebuild.
5. Is this a simple issue of a piece of dirt getting stuck in an internal carburator passage?
6. Did you put the weight and check ball back into the correct hole?
7. Did you change the main jet (if your kit included one)? If yes, change it back, if no, try the new one.
8. Is this a fuel starvation issue? Recheck the float level and make sure it is opening/closing nicely.

And then it is time for checking the timing related items, I save this for last because you weren't complaining of running issues prior to the carburator being installed, so it shouldn't have changed, but maybe it did.

First get a dial back timing light and a tach under the hood, check the timing. Check the timing at a couple different RPMs... 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500. Post the numbers, somebody smarter than I will tell you if the advance is working properly. I wouldn't touch the timing yet, unless you can guarentee that the harmonic balancer has not slipped.

Thanks Ill go through those steps

I can not tell you how nice it was this morning just having to turn the key and the car started.. Not having to hold the choke close and get greasy hand before having to go to school CoupeBoy I can not thank you enough

I am going to post some pictures... There were variations in the kit parts and the parts that were in the carb such as the needle for the float the the Spark contorl valve
I put all the new parts in

I'd revert one piece on the carb at a time with the original parts. Make sure you have the correct spacer/gasket for the SCV.

Any updates?

Car is running great!! Been fidling with it throughout the week and it seems to be running alot better... No more hesitation...its amazing

Today's high temperature will be -8f, so if you got some pics of it on the motor soaking up some sun... Post email up!

What about the hesitation and stumbling you mentioned after rebuild? We're you able to tune them out?
