I know where the choke is on a autolite 1101 carb, am how to adjust it bu I am having problems getting the choke to shut off. If it is really hot like 90 outside and I cold start my car first time in the day, the choke will be on for only a min or 2. But if it is cold like today is in fresno ca it will not shot off for like 20 minutes. At stop lights in gear it revs at around 800-900 rpm and out of gear 1500-1700 rpm. Drives me crazy! How am I to adjust my carb? Where does the choke flat rest at when adjusting wide open or closed or halfway; the spring do I set it in relaxed or tensed or whatever. I am just not sure. There are no leaks because before this all happend I set if like 6 months ago to better start up and be alittle leaner, but now it isnt ever. My gas milege I dont think has changed but dont like having it run so high when just driving. I can shut it off only for a few secs when I press the gas rel hard to the floor but it will only stay like that for a few seconds or until I start driving again. Help.

One more thing, ever since it started getting cold again I get drops of watter at my tailpipe that is black as well. This isnt old or anything but want to know if there is something that I can do about it so I dont have such a mess in my driveway especially when the choke is on making the black water jet out through my pipe.

The spring in the choke housing is heated by air being drawn through the tube from the exhaust manifold. So there are a couple of things to check to keep it working properly. The tube is attached to a hole in the manifold so you need to make sure that the tube and the hole are clear. The carb has a passage just inside the choke housing that provides the suction needed to draw that heated air through the spring, so you need to make sure that passage is clear also.

You also have the option of converting to an electric choke. Just run power to the new housing and spring from the coil.

Good luck, Ric.

how do I adjust it so that it is not too rich so to speak in the mornings when I start her up? I dont want to make it worse; I drove from my house all the way to school and the choke was though minimal, it was still on making my idle 1100 when set to 850-900 rpm. It is more difficult to stop when my cars choke is working against me too, so I need to get this fixed.

How do I get an electric choke anyways, how do I stall it, where can I get on for my carb, how much does it cost, how do I install it, etc.

on the back of the carb, you should see the black choke casing. you can adjust when it chokes the engine by loosening the screws on the casing and rotating it. Most caps say which direction is which. IIRC, rotating it counter clockwise will make it richer, CW will make it leaner.

Also, I believe there is an adjustment screw between the choke housing and the throttle lever that you can adjust to help as well. I know the 1100s have it, not sure of the 1101s (if there is any difference).

adjust your fast idle cam just under your choke rich/lean flap adjuster. It is just the oposite of the idle adjustment, meaning you have to get to it from the valve cover side. This will keep your choke idle down (@1100rpms normal warm-up idle). As for the choke staying on too long, check your heat tube to the carb and check the thermostat spring inside the rich/lean flap adjuster (behind the black cap). Make sure all passages are clear for the heat tube, from under the exhaust manifold and through, into the heat tube and then into the carb (which pulls the hot air through via vac.). Good luck,
