I've got the motor and tranny back into my '66. I was putting the clutch mechanism back together and realized that I don't know how to re-install the clutch retaining spring.

The spring that I am referring to goes from the clutch fork to where??? I've got the z-bar and all other parts together, but I must be missing something?? I can't figure out where the other end of this spring goes. I've consulted my shop manual, but the diagram is unclear.

Any pictures would be much appreciated.. Thanks in advance.

My '64 Falcon has a long spring from the flutch cork to the "belly bar". There's a small hole drilled for it to hook in. Does that sound possible for your Mustang?

Thanks for the reply. I'll check. The diagram in the shop manual looks like it connects to the left side of the engine, but I can't figure out where??

Any mustang guys out there?? :D

With the spring hooked to the fork take the other end and make an arc along any large surfaces (usually the belly bar or crossmember) then look for a small hole about a 1/4-1/2" farther away. The spring should go in a small hole and be close to perpendicular to the fork. Hook the spring in that hole first and with a pair of needle noses stretch over the end of the fork. Make sure all the linkages are in they're proper areas first as they will fall out of position with out the spring on.

I couldn't find a picture of it on my website and my car is currently in pieces in that area so it won't help to take a picture when I get home.

If I recall correctly though, my original set up had a small piece of flat stock that got sandwiched between the bellhousing and block. It had 2 holes, one for the bellhousing bolt to hold it in place, and another for the spring. There was a small notch in the bellhousing so it would still fit flush.

Thanks, I'll check that. Does it matter that I've used a '67 bellhousing and 3.03 tranny??

On my '66 Mustang there is a small hole in the z bar that the spring hooks to on one side and the fork on the other side. I don't know if it is correct, but that's the way it has been for a while with no problems.
