Correct starter l6?

I'm confused!

The starter I bought does not fit. It's an l6 200...

All the other starters look exactly the same even from different stores.

The little cover that is on the side of the starter hits the block itself. What gives?

I've been getting a 2 bolt starter for a manual transmission car which is what I have.

The block is a '66 l6 200 and the bellhousing is a '67 casting so I can run the larger clutch and my toploader transmission.

I understand that the starter is the same for V8 cars as well?

you probably need to reclock the starter. take the bolts that hold the starter together out, then turn the housing until the housing no longer hits the block and bolt everything back together.

I don't think I can do that, the front cover lines up with whatever moving parts are under the cover that's on the housing.

Yeah man, don't clock it as they may void a warranty or refuse a return on it. Those places can be funny about that stuff.

If the startet was the same one from several different places, then it must just be an application error. You didn't mention hat year starter you were asking for at the parts store. I have a 67 bell housing on my t5 and asked for a starter for a 68 mustang with a 200 and it worked great for me. I think there was a change around 67 which us why I asked for a 68 iirc.

there's a thread w/pic on starters. I think it's more about auto vs manuel starter differences tho.
Try an use the search function? Might still B useful...
(hummm, some 200s are high mount - but way different yrs)

"...a 2 bolt starter for a manual..."
there's more'n one - got the engine block ID numbers? sure the near 50 yr old vehicle has orig engine?

bring the starter to the parts place. ask for a replacement, we could do it at my place...

you are not changing the orientation of the nose piece, that is already set. you are changing the orientation of the body of the starter. if you are worried about voiding the warranty, ask the store manager where you got the starter from if there would be an issue.

I had them order another one with the exact same part number and it conveniently worked!

I no idea what's up with the one I got.

Doesn't look like it would work on any car actually... Very strange looking starter. Wish I had taken a picture of it!

Success! (try, try, again,,,
If able - get numbers off of each, to publish here -
Some one may have an explanation?

Thanks for your info so far!
