Could it be the Pertronix?

I have an ignitor unit inside of a dual advance dizzy and i did a dumb thing when i set it up initially. I put the sleeve too close to the unit and the sleeve was shaved off quite a bit while it dug into the unit. The unit and sleeve continue to work today but my engine isn't running too well. It has rough starts, it vibrates alot and it shuts off at times.

Is my understand correct that the radius of the sleeve would have an effect similar to that of dwell in points? Im assuming that now that the sleeve has been shaved down to a smaller radius the dwell time where the magnet doesn't connect to the unit is smaller and therefore the charge time for the coil is too small and im not getting an adequate spark. The coil heats up and recently its burned out two coils this month.

Is my reasoning right? Could this be the culprit? Does the pertronix have dwell?

Scrap the pertronix & install a duraspark to trigger a msd box.

The pertronix I was ok, but rest of the pertronix systems are junk.

Bite the bullet & fix your problem for good. Bill

Pertronix controls dwell electronically, but your problem is probably related to the magnets in the sleeve that goes over the points cam. The mags are only held in with that green tape. if that gets scraped off the magnets can fall out and the car won't fire on that cylinder.

Pertronix is a good, simple drop in solution, but I also like the duraspark better. The mechanical/vacuum advance combination works better and the design is more robust.

Pertronix finally did away with the tape and magnets are now molded in. I still don't like them, but some people have success with them. Burning up two coils indicates you may have it wired in wrong, another thing that plagues people with them. Duraspark is still my favorite as well.

Although I too prefer a Duraspark , I'm a fan of Pertronix as well , all systems have their weaknesses, one thing I've found ( because I recurve Distributers on a machine ) is the Original series needs to have the reluctor ring as close as possiple to flush to the pickup when its slid down on, or missfires will occur

another system to consider is using the points to trigger a TFI-IV module from an EFI-era ford. i've had great success with this system, its easy to wire up, as described at gofastforless.com
