i have this 221 and it idles ok but once u start giving it some fuel it makes a crack sound and pops sometimes too. I have got new plugs, leads, changed the condensor in the dizzy, tried a few different carbies tried adjusting the timing but no matter what i have done it still does it. anyone got any ideas?

yes thats possible.
the car has been sitting for a while im thinking about doing a compression check. mayb there could be a build up behind a valve and it is not sitting right, might need a blow out. Could it be the head gasket? I have checked the water and oil but there is no show of any signs, but it is blowing white smoke when i give it some fuel. Mayb a water jacket has broken into a cylinder?

best way is to pull the head off only takes an hour.if the car hasnt been running for a while a valve may be just sticky.i have found a good thing to do with a motor that has been sitting for a while is to get it running and get some engine oil/trans fluid/valve saver etc and slowly tip a little into the car when its running and that helps lube the valves up realy good.
maybe if the motors been sitting try the oil thing for a while and if it dont fix it then pull the head off and check the valves/gasket etc?
