i fixed my camshaft lock up problem. i went to the machine shop today and robbed the cam spacer i was looking for off of one of their junk motors. this poor old thing looked like it had been used as a boat anchor. after struggling with the timing gear cover and gears, i hit paydirt.... er... pay-mud anyway. imagine my surprise when i found a valve seat spacing the gear from the cam shaft through the thrust plate. it fits and works well. the cam no longer locks up and the motor should be built, installed, and running by the weekend. thanks for the pictures in the last thread.

i broke the vlave seat @15 lbs/ft of torque. 20 years in a lake might have something to do with it.
.
uh... whoops!

That sucks. but what were you torqueing?

the chiltons manual says in the text that the cam sprocket retaining bolt should be between 35-45 lbs/ft. i made it to 15 lbs/ft before the spacer (valve seat) split on one side. i heard a clink and then the bolt became easier to turn. i knew something was wrong. the spacer (valve seat) is tapered in on side so the valve can seal against the valve seat. that tapered side should face the cam. i had the tapered side facing the gear. the boss coming out of the cam has a radiused edge around its base. thats why it split. lesson learned. chalk that one up to experience.

the new valve seat works great for the spacer. gonna stab a motor today and hook it all up tomorrow. drivin by the weekend!

everything is in the car. we need fluids and an oil filter and then it'll start. i have to go tell my girlfriend's parents that my girlfriend is now my fiance. i have to do that tonight while my buddies go for a test drive. i want to be in both places but i guess i have my priorities in order. love is a wonderful thing.
