Cross Flow Aussi head on US 250?

Will an Aussi Cross Flow head work on a US 250?

Is the cross flow better then the 250-2V head?

Will it all fit into a Maverick?

My Maverick friends have convinced me to keep the 250 rather then do a 302, so I figure a unique 250 is the way to go.

Wadda you guys think

Jack is working on adapting a Crossflow head to a US 250 for his Locost project. Check out the articles here

http://www.fordsix.com/200xflow.htm

It is not a direct swap and requires special mods to the block and head. Also, it is UNPROVEN as to whether it will work.

There is a post buried in the forums explaining why it is felt that adapting a Crossflow head to a US 250 will not get you the best performance. Do a search and you should be able to find it.

From Jacks post for Hybrid 200 X-flow:-
Stock or Duraspark I distributor - The Duraspark II distributor will not fit a 200 Crossflow. The intake manifold interferes with the DII distributor cap.

Crab-style Distributor cap - this is something you have to make.

You will still run into problems with this on a 250, even though it is 1.6" taller in the block. The Aussie distributor will have to be used even on a 250US engine as the intake manifold still fouls the Duraspark ignition cap.

What Jack doesn't say, for benifit of clarity, is that the Aussie X-flow block has 7 inches of width, where as the US 250 is as narrow as 5.55 inches wide. There is a whooping 0.5" added to the true left side of the block to cope with the need for splayed pushrods of the alloy head, and about 0.70" on the right hand side to allow a new set of water galleries to cool the head. This means the head gasket is totally different.

Jacks has blocked off the exhast water galleries in the alloy head, and smartly opened up another channel to make up for it.

Because of the added expense of the 'foregin' ignition, the welding and the alloy head , the option of importing an Alloy head 4.1 x-flow is seen as better.

If you are planning to use a custom intake using the same kind of Mikuni carbs Jack is contemplating, then you could use the stock US Duraspark ignition.

The other issue is that, up until now, all Aussie blocks have had different bellhousing patterns. I have got that problem licked, so you can use a SBF transmission of any type. And you don't need to buy it from me, the plans are posted on the Drivetrain forum.

So there are more reasons to consider importing the Oz 250 over building your own Hybrid.

and there's a complete 2V setup sitting in the South Bay that's ready for plucking. you may wanna hit up an owner of a red falcon.

Ok, I read the posts and looked at Jack's site. As interesting as it is I think I better stick with a 2V head.

I really thank all you guys for all the info. I really needed that help.

So there is a 2V head in the So.Bay area? Wonder if he will be in Long Beach Sunday for the swap meet?

Happy Holidays everyone

The adaptation I'm doing is to a 200. Because of the much shorter deck, the distributor is a problem. It interferes with the #1 and #2 intake runners.

However, I've done a little measuring in the garage, and there wouldn't be that clearance issue if you used a US 250. A DII would fit just fine.

I called the owner of the 2V he knows how to get in touch with you.

couldn`t ya cut the intake of a stock ford head and make a sheet metle intake ?

I once saw a U.S. head milled off so that the intake and exhaust were flat. A plate was bolted to the exhaust with a header and sealed with silicone at the intake ports. The plate had holes that matched up with the intake ports. A plate with carb mounts was them bolted to the main plate and 6 motorcycle carbs were attached.

Not sure how the engine ran. I say it at the L.A. Roadster show swap meet 2 years ago and the guy wanted $1000. for the entire engine. I think he said it ran in a USAC midget.I also saw an artical on the engine in a early 60's Rod & Custom.

It's possible, but not really as the seal at the intake ports may be difficult to maintain.
