Crossflow sumps and EFI intakes?

Well, I just test-fit my crossflow into my Datsun 280.

It sort of fits. Except I have a rear-sump Datsun and a front sump crossflow...how rare are rear-sump oil pans for the crossflows?

Also, is there a different EFI intake than the "over the top" style? I have room all around but it will be very close to the hood (assuming I can lower the engine several inches through a better oil pan--dry sump if I can't go with a rear sump).

Does anyone have a picture of a rear sump pan, perhaps with a ruler nearby so I can compare the profile to my engine bay?

And last...a side profile (with ruler) of an OHC as I am considering going OHC for the Datsun.

It's really a decent fit...with a T-5 transmission the mounts are only about 5cm (2") from the Datsun mounts, and the engine is noticeably lighter. The only collision right now is between the sump and crossmember.

I'm still surprised I can't find anyone who has done a Ford six into a Datsun Z car...it looks like it won't be too bad a swap (knock on wood!).

If my laptop hadn't decided to die Monday morning I'd post pics of the "test dangle" and measurements...maybe after I get back to the ship (next week) I can get something working.

Cortina oil pan should do it. Not overly common, but out there. Is your block doubled up with dipstick bosses?

Not sure if the intake on it's own will interchange with the crossflow you have, but there are these style with the side injection...

heres my manifold i had made up for my xflow. Bolts onto the section that the factory injectors go in... its not finished tho but u get the idea...

Why on earth would you have anything to do with a crossflow, when the OHC sixs are cheaper and much better.
I saw an AU LPG six here in perth for $800, which seems awfully good valus to me.
I wouldnt worry too much about the sump, even if you get an AU alloy jobbie, cutting and welding isnt that big a problem these days.
The manifolds wont interchange between crossflow and OHC, but I think the later OHC will accept the earlier EA style if that helps.
these days with petrol prices Id go for LPG and dedicated at that.
Food for thought?

Okay, so I'm seeing an OHC in my Datsun's future, with a custom sump? Are there rear sump OHCs?

I'm going with the Crossflow for fitment at the moment as it's what I have in my garage...and being in the USA, I won't have an OHC by the weekend. ;)

So, the crossflow "as it sits" goes in the Mercury Zephyr, and since I have room for a stock OHC intake in the Datsun then I just need an engine and transmission from down under.

Is there a significant dimensional or weight difference in the OHC versus the crossflow? Specifically thinking of an XR6 motor.

3 more questions and I'll give you some peace:

1. What is the approximate distance from the center of the engine mount to the center of the transmission mount? On the XFlow, it's roughly 38 inches; on the Datsun it's roughly 39. Both engines used T-5 transmissions at one point or another; so I know that part will fit correctly with a simple modified engine mount.

2. What would a very good condition OHC and manual transmission (T-5 or similar dimensioned?) run for? Is it worth looking at a rebuilt or a crate motor? (okay, that was a bonus question).

Thanks!
Ben

You'll pay appreciably more for the manual trans option, assuming you buy the whole computer/loom with the driveline. Don't know how much except to suggest that an auto (non-XR6) would be $400-$600 in the car. Add pulling, crating etc... You want pre-VCT, right?

Also - doesn't the rack foul your crossflow oil pan in the Zephyr?

Greywolf... I have that engine here in California... it's not a 5 speed, but lemme know if any dimensions off it or what not would help out !
(I have a TBI one too for comparison if it would help..)

Are there rear sump OHCs?

You can source a Cortina Engine which is rear setup (and change the head to a newer Falcon head) or a Falcon 250Xflow you just use a Cortina Sump and Oil pickup + the 2 mainbolts that the oil pickup bolts to..

for OHC.. the motor pictured abouve you can use a modified Cortina Sump on it.. EA -- EL Falcon motors you can use this setup. AU you cannot do as it has a cast alloy Sump.

If you want to use a BA XR6 motor with a rear sump you need to get an engine out a Ford Territory 4x4 as the sump is @ the rear to allow the front diff to sit in there. A Ba motor out of a Ford Falcon has a front sump but theyre Cast Alloy so its best to get a Territory motor as the rear dipstick is allready drilled and u dont need to mess around with it

if you want it to be turbo just get a Falcon XR6 Turbo motor and swap all the guts over to the Territory Block.. or wait to find a crashed 2007 Territory Turbo but that'll be a while :)

Why on earth you say. Sounds like Im a idiot for having lots of them.
OHC 6s cheeper , Thats news , Cutting and shutting alloy sumps might a bit rough. hears food for thought , even a mild crossflow with a weber would hose a Lpg AU or BA , Ive had both , and both are crap until 4 grand and things are still borring to say the least.

thats why you bolt on a turbo and really get em moving;)

i have hosed off heaps of 4.0L ohc cars in my cortina with a 250 crossflow, they still got some nuts dont worry about that.

thats cos 90% of falcons are autos n the auto box's are slugs :P

i run with the big boys as normal cars are no fun anymore.

V6 Manual Commodores = no chance.
the only thing that comes close is a V8 manual Commodore.
auto ones.. i can take on no worries.

WRX get me off the line but i catch up pretty quick smart.
