is there anyway to tell if your block has been decked or head milled? i looked around for this info w/ no luck. thanks

Pete

Do you mean to externally or infernally tell? It's easier with the head off; look for deck height and also the chamber volume. From the outside, the only clue to milling might be compression ratio.

Regards, Adam.

OK, speaking of which, how does one measure compression ratio on a finished motor?

Guess; refer to notes taken during rebuild, measure compression pressures, dial cam lift / timing and mess about with DD2K... Certainly not as simple as doing it earlier!

well, I measured everything up during the build up, but I was hoping there was a way to measure it officially afterward.
Thanks ADDO

We all wish there was! It would really help diagnosis at times.

Was just thinking.... maybe stupid idea...don't shoot me if it won't go.... :lol:

Turn out the spark plug of a cilinder.
Put it in BDC and pour ATF fluid in it (carefull measure how much) thru the top of the hole of the spark plug.
Vacuum (with brakevacuumer=>don't know the right english word :oops: ) the fluid out.
Put the piston in TDC and do the same.

Now you have 2 internal volumes and you kan calculate how much it's squeezed. Maybe you can't fill the chamber completely, but this isn't a ploblem because it wont change anything to the ratio....(i think) :roll:

for example....

cilinder in BDC => 550cc
cilinder in TDC => 65cc

ratio is 550/65 = 8,64

now...maybe you have filled to top of sparkplug hole and the chamber is't totally full for example 11cc it's logical that the second measuring is the same volume that not can filled up so i don't think that the ratio is changing or is it?... :roll:
hmm...i'm not that good in mathematics so maybe it's just not right

Help me out...

greets from Belgium

Joost

It should work if you can get all the air bubbles out. Worth a thought - thanks!

I was thinking of something similiar. Fill one up with fluid, using a compression checker, except put a T fitting in and drain it to a bottle. Measure the amount you put in and the amount that came out...

adam,

ya, i meant w/ the head off. like, are there stock specs available for how thick the deck, etc. are?

see, i'm pretty sure i have the original motor, which means for how it's running and the more than likely clocked over odometer--it's been rebuilt. i wouldn't want to have it milled (for the newer, thicker head gasket) if it's already been done for several reasons.. thanks for the info

You might find someone with an uncut head, who can measure the length of the through hole for the head bolt in a few positions.

Measure the bore for overbore determination. That's easy. Blocks are seldom decked unless the meachine shop is attentive to detail. Heads are usually milled to assure true. I have seen some just linished. This is generalising because most rebuilds are done with function, not performance foremost, and the cost limits time available.
